Overview

Universitas Wiraswasta Indonesia (UWI) was a private higher-education institution in Jakarta, Indonesia, founded in 1982 by Halim S. Tirtamadja, Ph.D. It was established under the auspices of Yayasan Pendidikan Wiraswasta Indonesia (the Indonesian Entrepreneurship Education Foundation) and received its licence to run higher-education programmes from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in the same year. The university was supervised within the LLDikti Region III Jakarta service area. UWI's early leadership was notable: its first rector was Prof. Mr. Sunario Sastrowardoyo, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and a figure associated with the 1928 Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda). The institution offered undergraduate (Strata 1 / Sarjana) programmes through three faculties: Economics, Law, and Engineering. It also ran several class formats, including regular classes, employee classes, and entrepreneurship classes. In the national accreditation system, UWI was accredited with a B rating by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) of the Ministry of Education and Culture, reportedly from the 2001/2002 academic year onward. In mid-June 2023, the Directorate General of Higher Education (Ditjen Diktiristek) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology named 23 private higher-education institutions whose licences had been revoked for problems, and Universitas Wiraswasta Indonesia was among them. The stated reasons varied, including defrauding students, issuing undergraduate diplomas without coursework, and lacking clear study programmes and students. The revocation effectively ended the institution's operations, and its status is now defunct.
