Overview

Universitas Wahid Hasyim (UNWAHAS) is a private higher education institution located in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. It began operating as a higher education institution in the 2000–2001 academic year and is widely known by its slogan 'Kampus ASWAJA', reflecting its grounding in the Islamic tradition of Ahlussunnah Waljama'ah. The university was established under the auspices of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) educational network, with the Yayasan Pendidikan Tinggi Nahdlatul Ulama Jawa Tengah (Central Java NU Higher Education Foundation) serving as its founding and managing body. The university offers a range of academic programs across multiple faculties. Over the years it has expanded its program portfolio significantly: from 2 diploma (D-III) and 8 undergraduate (S-1) programs in 2000, to 16 undergraduate programs, 5 master's programs, 1 doctoral program, and 3 professional programs by 2025. A notable expansion was the opening of the Faculty of Medicine in 2016, which began accepting new students that year. In November 2024, UNWAHAS received the 'Unggul' (Excellent) accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT), recognizing the quality of its educational provision. As a private university, UNWAHAS is not listed on any stock exchange and operates under the governance of its foundation. It maintains active cooperation networks with domestic and international universities as well as government and non-government institutions focused on educational development. The university continues to develop its facilities and academic offerings to meet market needs, positioning itself as a growing institution within Indonesia's private higher education landscape.

History

The establishment of Universitas Wahid Hasyim is rooted in the educational mission of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), as outlined in the organization's Articles of Association. To realize this mission, on 7 May 1999 in Semarang, the Yayasan Pendidikan Tinggi Nahdlatul Ulama Jawa Tengah (Central Java NU Higher Education Foundation) was founded, formalized by Notary Deed No. 13 of 1999. The foundation's initial board included figures such as Drs. KH. Syamsuddin Anwar as chairman, Drs. Mudzakkir Ali as secretary, and Drs. H.A. Fatah Dahlan as treasurer, among others. The foundation began preparations to establish a higher education institution, initially agreeing to found a Politeknik Nahdlatul Ulama (NU Polytechnic). However, on 11 May 1999, the chairman of the Central Java NU Regional Board assigned Drs. HM. Chabib Toha and Drs. Mudzakir Ali to consult with the General Chairman of PBNU, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), in Jakarta regarding the plan. The outcome of the consultation was a directive to establish a university instead, and to prepare a proposal for that purpose. On 12 July 1999, the foundation's leadership consulted again with the PBNU General Chairman, who provided several guidelines: the university should not use the name 'Islam' or 'NU' but should embody Islam and NU as its spirit; the name should be chosen after consultation with ulama and tawassul to the late KH. Sholeh Darat; the hierarchical relationship between the university, its foundation, and NU should be clarified in a notary deed while respecting the foundation's autonomy; and PBNU committed to seeking funds for land acquisition (10–20 hectares) and the development of a rectorate building, a lecture hall, and initial operational funds. The university began operating as a higher education institution in the 2000–2001 academic year. It adopted the name 'Wahid Hasyim' in honor of KH. Wahid Hasyim, a prominent NU figure and father of Abdurrahman Wahid. The institution is known by the slogan 'Kampus ASWAJA', reflecting its commitment to the Islamic tradition of Ahlussunnah Waljama'ah. Over the decades, UNWAHAS has expanded its academic offerings. In 2000, it managed 2 diploma (D-III) and 8 undergraduate (S-1) programs. By 2005, this had grown to 2 D-III and 11 S-1 programs. In 2010, it offered 2 D-III, 12 S-1, and 2 master's (S-2) programs. In 2013, it opened an undergraduate program in Informatics Engineering (Teknik Informatika). In 2015, it managed 15 S-1, 2 S-2, and 1 professional program. A significant milestone was the opening of the Faculty of Medicine in 2016, which officially began accepting new students. By 2020, the university managed 16 S-1, 2 S-2, 1 doctoral (S-3), and 2 professional programs. By 2025, it managed 16 S-1, 5 S-2, 1 S-3, and 3 professional programs. In November 2024, UNWAHAS achieved a major institutional milestone by receiving the 'Unggul' (Excellent) accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) through Decree No. 2104/SK/BAN-PT/Ak/PT/XI/2024. This recognition reflects the university's commitment to high quality standards in higher education. The university continues to develop cooperation networks with domestic and international universities, as well as government and non-government institutions, and strives to improve its facilities and academic programs to meet market demands.
