Overview
Universitas Subang (UNSUB) is a private higher-education institution located in Subang Regency, West Java, Indonesia. It operates under the auspices of Yayasan Kutawaringin Subang, a foundation established on 10 November 1964. The university traces its roots to Universitas Kutawaringin (UNKUWA), which was founded in the 1960s as an extension of Universitas Padjadjaran and IKIP Bandung but ceased operations in 1969 due to a government ban on long-distance classes. After a period of inactivity, the foundation revived its educational mission by opening Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Administrasi (STIA) in 1980 in cooperation with Universitas Padjadjaran, followed by Sekolah Tinggi Teknik (STT) Kutawaringin in 1997. The current Universitas Subang began offering programs again on 26 August 1982, driven by the initiative of Drs. Eep Hidayat, then chairman of the Subang Regional House of Representatives and later Regent of Subang. Today, UNSUB comprises seven faculties offering programs in computer science, law, engineering, administrative science, communication science, agribusiness and agricultural engineering, and teacher training and education. The university is headquartered in Subang Regency and serves primarily the local population of West Java.
History
The history of Universitas Subang is closely tied to Yayasan Kutawaringin Subang, a foundation established on 10 November 1964. The foundation initially organized Universitas Kutawaringin (UNKUWA), an institution conceived by Otje Djunjunan, R.H. Acu Samsudin, and R. Erawan Asmara. UNKUWA operated as a long-distance class of Universitas Padjadjaran and IKIP Bandung, but its operations were halted in 1969 when the government prohibited universities from opening long-distance classes. In 1980, former Subang Regent Ir. Sukanda Kartasasmita revived the idea of having a university in Subang. The foundation then opened Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Administrasi (STIA) in cooperation with Universitas Padjadjaran, with the aim of improving the human resources of local government officials and the general public. This was formalized through Higher Education Decree No. SKPT No.95 dated 20 May 1980. In 1997, at the initiative of Subang Regent Drs. H. Abdul Wachyan, Sekolah Tinggi Teknik (STT) Kutawaringin Subang was established to meet the labor demands of the TEXMACO industrial factory in Pabuaran district. The foundation's long-held aspiration to re-establish a university was finally realized through the initiative of Drs. Eep Hidayat, chairman of the Subang Regional House of Representatives and later Regent of Subang for the 2004–2009 and 2009–2014 periods. On 26 August 1982, education at Universitas Subang resumed. Since then, the university has grown to include seven faculties: Computer Science, Law, Engineering, Administrative Science, Communication Science, Agribusiness and Agricultural Engineering, and Teacher Training and Education. It continues to operate under the Kutawaringin Subang Foundation and serves the higher education needs of Subang Regency and West Java.
