History

The desire to establish Universitas Semarang dates back to 1985, when the idea was raised within the Ikatan Alumni Universitas Diponegoro (Ika-Undip), the alumni association of Diponegoro University. In a meeting at the rector's office chaired by Ir. Joetata Hadihardaja and attended by Diponegoro University Rector Prof. Sudarto, S.H., and representatives of each faculty, participants proposed founding a private university named Universitas Semarang. The name was chosen to recall the historical fact that an earlier Universitas Semarang had been the embryo from which Universitas Diponegoro was born. While pursuing the university plan, the Ika-Undip board established the Yayasan Alumni Universitas Diponegoro as the official vehicle for its activities, which also included computer courses and an engineering consultancy. Preparations for the university continued, and four departments were initially designated: Technology Services, Agricultural Technology, Engineering, and Health Technology. However, because the Ministry of Health had not yet issued a permit, the Health Technology department, with its occupational therapy major, could not be launched. Given the perception that Central Java already had too many universities and the unclear requirements from Dikti for establishing a new university, the plan could not be realised at that time. On the advice of Drs. Soehardi, the coordinator of Kopertis Region VI for Central Java, the goal of founding Universitas Semarang was temporarily suspended. Instead, Politeknik Semarang was established, with the expectation that it would later be converted into Universitas Semarang when circumstances allowed. Referring to Minister of Education and Culture Decree No. 0686/1991, which required a university to have at least three exact-science faculties and two non-exact-science faculties, Prof. Dr. Muladi, S.H., stated in a speech marking the sixth anniversary of Politeknik Semarang on 26 June 1993 that the committee had prepared a feasibility study for the establishment of Universitas Semarang. The plan finally received approval from the Minister of Education and Culture through Decree No. 160/D/O/1993 dated 23 November 1993, which changed Politeknik Semarang into Universitas Semarang. The decree stipulated that the polytechnic would be transformed into Universitas Semarang, operated by the Yayasan Alumni UNDIP; that Politeknik Semarang would be closed; and that the change of name would cover the university, faculties, departments and study programmes. It was followed by Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 638/DIKTI/KEP/1993, which granted registered status to the faculties and study programmes at Universitas Semarang. Based on this process, it was agreed that the anniversary of Universitas Semarang would use the birth date of Politeknik Semarang, 23 June 1987. Since then, USM has grown into a large private university. From 2010, all student activities were concentrated at the campus on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta. The university has been led by a series of rectors, including Ir. Widjatmoko, Ir. Imam Soewardi, Prof. Dr. H. Pahlawansjah Harahap, Andy Kridasusila and Dr. Supari. Its foundation, the Yayasan Alumni Universitas Diponegoro, continues to govern the institution, with a supervisory board that has included Prof. Drs. Sudharto Prawata Hadi. Today USM offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes and reports an accreditation status of "Unggul" (Excellent).
