Overview

Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri (UNP Kediri) is a private higher-education institution in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia, operating under the YPLP PT-PGRI Kediri foundation. It was formally established by Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 24/D/O/2006 dated 12 October 2006, which granted permission for new study programs and merged several colleges into a single university. The institution traces its roots to 1976, when PGRI branches in the City and Regency of Kediri formed a sub-foundation and prepared the establishment of IKIP PGRI East Java in Kediri. Over the following decades the institution evolved from a teacher-training institute into a multi-faculty university, adding economics, engineering, and nursing schools that were later consolidated into UNP Kediri. The university offers academic and professional education across faculties that include teacher training and education, social sciences, language and arts, mathematics and natural sciences, engineering, economics, agriculture/livestock, and health sciences. Its programs span diploma, undergraduate, and graduate levels, and it also publishes journals and conference proceedings. UNP Kediri describes its vision for 2023–2027 as becoming a higher-education institution with an ASEAN regional reputation that is excellent, resilient, and innovative in developing science, technology, and art based on local wisdom. Its mission emphasizes quality teaching with information and communication technology, locally oriented innovative research, community service, and good university governance. UNP Kediri is led by a rector and four vice rectors. As of the official website, the rector is Dr. Zainal Afandi, M.Pd., with Dr. Irwan Setyowidodo, M.Si. as Vice Rector I; Dra. Elis Irmayanti, S.E., M.Pd. as Vice Rector II; Dr. Agus Muji Santoso, M.Si. as Vice Rector III; and a fourth vice rector listed on the site. The university recruits students through four admission pathways: achievement, partnership, KIP Kuliah, and independent. It offers scholarships including KIP Kuliah and maintains active cooperation with government bodies and international partners, as shown by recent agreements and fellowship programs. As a private institution, UNP Kediri is not listed on a stock exchange; it is owned and governed by the YPLP PT-PGRI Kediri foundation. Its activities include academic programs, research, community service, journals, proceedings, virtual classes, and cultural programs. The university continues to strengthen its national and regional reputation through accreditation, partnerships, and participation in competitive funding programs.

History

The history of Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri begins in 1976, when PGRI branches in the City and Regency of Kediri formed a sub-foundation, Sub Yayasan PGRI Cabang Kotamadya dan Kabupaten Kediri, to establish a higher-education institution. A preparatory committee was formed to meet the requirements for founding a college, leading to the creation of IKIP PGRI East Java in Kediri. Based on an evaluation by Kopertis Region VII Surabaya, the institution received "Registered" status through Decree No. 87A/I/1976 dated 17 May 1976, authorizing it to offer education up to the Sarjana Muda (bachelor's junior) level. It initially comprised the Faculty of Education with a General Education program and the Faculty of Social Sciences Education with a History program. In 1983, Decree No. 0428/O/1983 dated 7 October 1983 added a PMP-KN study program to the Faculty of Social Sciences Education. Expansion of faculties and study programs began in the 1983/1984 academic year. With operational permission from Kopertis Region VII No. 155/O/1984 dated 29 May 1984, IKIP PGRI East Java in Kediri was allowed to open undergraduate programs across several faculties: the Faculty of Education (Curriculum and Educational Technology; Educational Psychology and Guidance), the Faculty of Social Sciences Education (History Education; Pancasila Moral and Citizenship Education), the Faculty of Language and Arts Education (Indonesian Language Education; English Language Education), and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (Mathematics Education). Subsequently, by Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 1398/O/1984, the institution separated from IKIP PGRI East Java. It became an independent institute, IKIP PGRI Kediri, based on Decree No. 070/O/1985 dated 18 February 1985, receiving "Registered" status and authority to conduct undergraduate education. Along with this change, new faculties and programs were proposed: Business and Accounting Education under the Faculty of Social Sciences Education, Biology under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education, and a Faculty of Sports and Health Education with D-III and S-1 Sports Education programs. In 1990, by Decree No. 0124/O/1990 dated 9 March 1990, all study programs at IKIP PGRI Kediri received "Recognized" status. In 1998, when new accreditation rules were introduced, all programs received "Accredited" status based on BAN PT Decree No. 002/BAN/PT/AK-II/1998 dated 22 December 1998. The idea of transforming IKIP PGRI Kediri into a university was formalized in its Master Development Plan (RIP), targeting a change by 2005. As part of this plan, in 1993 YPLP PT-PGRI Kediri established STIE Kediri (School of Economics) based on Decree No. 28/D/O/1998 dated 20 April 1993, with Management and Accounting programs at S-1 and D-III levels. In 1998, YPLP PT-PGRI Kediri founded STT PGRI Kediri (School of Engineering) based on Decree No. 09/D/O/1998 dated 11 February 1998, with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering programs. In 2003, YPLP PT-PGRI Kediri established AKPER PGRI Kediri (Nursing Academy) based on Decree No. 140/D/O/2003 dated 5 September 2003, with a D-III Nursing program. Preparation for university status matured with the formation of a University Proposal Drafting Team based on Decree of the Chairman of PPLP PT-PGRI Kediri No. 070/SK/PPLP/PT-PGRI/2004 dated 17 August 2004. After a lengthy process, on 13 October 2006, by Decree of the Minister of National Education No. 241/D/O/2006, all higher-education institutions under PPLP PT-PGRI Kediri—IKIP PGRI Kediri, STIE Kediri, STT PGRI Kediri, and AKPER PGRI Kediri—merged into Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri. This was accompanied by the addition of new faculties and programs: the Faculty of Engineering with Informatics Engineering and Information Systems programs, and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry with Animal Production and Socio-Economics of Animal Husbandry programs. The official establishment decree is often cited as No. 24/D/O/2006 dated 12 October 2006, which granted permission for new study programs and the merger. Since its establishment, UNP Kediri has continued to develop its academic offerings, governance, and reputation. Its vision for 2023–2027 is to become a higher-education institution with an ASEAN regional reputation that is excellent, resilient, and innovative in developing science, technology, and art based on local wisdom. The university maintains journals, proceedings, virtual classes, and community service programs, and engages in national and international cooperation, including teacher professional education partnerships and fellowship programs with Malaysian institutions.
