The merger was formalized by a 1991 letter integrating the three schools under Kopertis Region II and one under Kopertais Region VII into Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro, and management was entrusted to the Badan Penyelenggara Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro under a 1992 Muhammadiyah Central Leadership decree. The university is organized into eight faculties, including Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Law, Economics and Business, Health Sciences, Islamic Religion, Engineering, Medicine, and Computer Science. History
Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro (UM Metro) traces its origins to four Muhammadiyah higher schools in Lampung: Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Muhammadiyah Metro, Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Muhammadiyah Metro, Sekolah Tinggi Teknik (STT) Muhammadiyah Metro, and Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ushuluddin Muhammadiyah Metro. These schools had already obtained registered status, and some of their study programs were recognized by the Department of Education and Culture in 1990. The formal integration took place according to letter number 01173/0/1991 dated 30 March 1991, which concerned the integration and change of form of three higher schools under the Coordination of Private Higher Education (Kopertis) Region II and one higher school under the Coordination of Private Islamic Higher Education (Kopertais) Region VII into Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro. After the merger, the four schools became the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), the Faculty of Economics (FE), the Faculty of Engineering (FT), and the Faculty of Ushuluddin (FU), with the latter later becoming the Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI). Management of the university was carried out by the Badan Penyelenggara Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro, as stipulated in Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Decree Number 44/SK-PP/III.B/2.b/1992. In practice, a Daily Implementing Body (BPH) was formed as an extension of the organizing body through Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Decree Number 32/SK-PP/III.B/2.b/1996 dated 30 March 1996. To anticipate the need for professional workers in society, the university developed a Diploma Three (D-3) program in Computer Informatics Management in the 1997/1998 academic year. In the 2002/2003 academic year, it opened the Faculty of Law, followed successively by study programs in English Language Education and Diploma 3 in Accounting, Financial Management, and Banking. In the last four years of the period described, development focused on increasing the level of degree programs. Starting in 2012, the Postgraduate Program in Biology Education (S2) was opened; in 2013, the Master of Management program was opened; and in 2014, the Master of Education Management program was opened. In 2017, UM Metro opened three study programs simultaneously: S1 Computer Science, Islamic Education Management, and Early Childhood Islamic Education. In the same year, it opened a new faculty named the Faculty of Computer Science, housing two programs: Computer Science and D3 Computer Informatics Management, which was later renamed D3 Information Systems. In 2019, UM Metro obtained permission to open Professional Teacher Education (PPG) for two study programs: Economic Education and History Education. According to its official website, UM Metro currently lists 38 study programs, 8 faculties, more than 8,300 active students, over 20,000 alumni, 375 national partnerships, and 55 international partnerships. It holds an institutional accreditation of "Baik Sekali" (Very Good). The university emphasizes an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum and MBKM, hybrid and digital learning, on-time graduation, reputable publications, accredited libraries, national grants, strategic partnerships, and certified lecturers.
