History

Universitas Merdeka Malang was established on 29 January 1964, one day after the dissolution of Universitas Sawerigading Malang. The predecessor institution, Universitas Sawerigading Cabang Malang, was founded in 1957 as a branch of Universitas Sawerigading Makassar, offering faculties of Law and Economics. It ceased operations, but in 1962 a plan to reopen it led to the formation of Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Sawerigading by Letkol. R. Edwin Soedardji, Soetikno, SH., and Dharna, MA. The branch became independent, which was not accepted by the Makassar parent, and on 28 January 1964 the foundation and university were dissolved. To address the plight of stranded students, the founders quickly established a new university on 29 January 1964 named Universitas Merdeka. A foundation, Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Merdeka Pusat Malang (YPTMPM), was created with its deed ratified on 5 July 1964, which is celebrated annually as Dies Natalis. In 1972, YPTMPM was renamed Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Merdeka Malang (YPTM). The university was founded as a bastion of Pancasila ideology and the 1945 Constitution. At the request of Colonel R. Edwin Soedardji, on 17 December 1968, UNMER Malang was incorporated into the Slagorde KODAM VIII/Brawijaya (now KODAM V/Brawijaya), which became its main patron, with daily supervision by Korem 083/Bhaladhika Jaya. Since 1976, systematic development has continued through long-term plans: RIP I (1976-1983), RIP II (1983-1987), RIP III (1987-1991), RIP IV (1993-1997), RIP V (1998-2006), and Renstra VI (2006-2015) and VII (2015-2023).
