History

Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMB Yogya) began as the Institut Pertanian Wangsa Manggala (IPW), founded in 1984 as an agricultural institute. In 1986 it was transformed into Universitas Wangsa Manggala (UNWAMA), established on 1 October 1986 under the Yayasan Wangsa Manggala. At its inception, UNWAMA had three faculties with four departments, and its first rector was Prof. Ir. Gembong Tjitrorosoepomo, a professor from the Faculty of Biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). Under his leadership, the university laid a strong academic foundation. In 1993, under Rector Prof. Dr. Soelistyo, MBA (a professor from the Faculty of Economics at UGM), UNWAMA expanded by adding the Faculty of Psychology and opening Management and Accounting study programs under the Faculty of Economics. From 1996, under Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Adnan, MSc (a professor from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and former Rector of UGM), the university continued to develop. In May 2008, the foundation decided to change the name of UNWAMA to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMB Yogya). This was formalized through Yayasan Wangsa Manggala Decree No. 02/SKep/Ket/YWM/IV/2008 dated 1 April 2008, and confirmed by the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia Decree No. 102/D/O/2008 dated 12 June 2008, which approved the name change from Universitas Wangsa Manggala Yogyakarta to Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta, operated by Yayasan Wangsa Manggala Yogyakarta. Following the name change, UMBY undertook restructuring and program development. In the 2008/2009 academic year, it retained eight existing programs (Agrotechnology, Livestock Industry Management, Sharia Banking and Insurance Economics, Management, Psychology, Food Technology, Accounting, and Electrical Engineering) and opened five new ones: Communication Science, Informatics and Multimedia, Mathematics Education, and English Language Education. The Faculty of Economics was renamed the Faculty of Economics and Business Communication. In 2018, the university added new programs: Sports Science, Guidance and Counseling, and a Master's program in Food Science. Under the leadership of Rector Dr. Alimatus Sahrah, MSi., MM, the university has aimed to become one of the best private universities in Yogyakarta, with popular programs including Psychology, Communication Science, Food Technology, Livestock, and Management. The university envisions itself as a millennial university that loves the homeland, has an entrepreneurial spirit, and develops into an internationally classed university. Future plans include establishing a Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (with programs in General Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Nutrition, and Nursing) and a Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences (with programs in Law, Public Administration, Government Studies, and a Master's in Communication Science), as well as opening doctoral programs.
