Overview

Universitas Halmahera (UNIERA) is a private higher education institution located on Jalan Wali Raya in Tobelo, North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. It is managed by Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Kristen Halmahera (the Halmahera Christian Higher Education Foundation) and is closely associated with the Gereja Masehi Injili di Halmahera (GMIH), the Evangelical Christian Church in Halmahera. The university presents itself as a "Kampus Santun Berdampak" — a courteous, impactful campus — that shapes character, competence, and leadership through a humanistic, contextual, and relevant academic ecosystem. The institution's origins lie in an Academy of Theology founded on 1 September 1967 in Ternate by GMIH. Its first lectures began on 28 January 1968, a date later commemorated as the institution's anniversary. Initially the academy admitted only junior high school graduates and trained them as church workers. In 1985 it became Sekolah Tinggi Teologi (STT) GMIH, a theological college affiliated with the Association for Theological Education in South East Asia (ATESEA) and the Association of Theological Schools in Indonesia (PERSETIA). The 1992 GMIH Synod in Daruba-Morotai decided that STT GMIH should be developed into a university, and in 2006 the foundation began planning the transformation through comparative studies, feasibility studies, and a licensing application to Indonesia's Ministry of National Education. The transformation was formalized when the Minister of National Education issued Decree No. 200/D/O/2008 on 22 September 2008, granting permission for new study programs and changing STT GMIH into Universitas Halmahera. The university held its first classes on 1 September 2008, and its official inauguration took place on 11 October 2008, led by the Director General of Higher Education (represented by the Coordinator of Kopertis Region XII). Today UNIERA comprises four faculties offering 13 undergraduate (Sarjana) programs and 2 master's (Magister) programs, all accredited by BAN-PT, Indonesia's national accreditation body. The university serves the educational needs of North Maluku and the broader eastern Indonesian region, combining a Christian foundation with a regional development mission. Its official website invites prospective students to register and highlights its commitment to character formation, competence, and leadership.

History

Universitas Halmahera (UNIERA) in Tobelo grew out of a long historical process that began with a theological academy. On 1 September 1967, the Gereja Masehi Injili di Halmahera (GMIH) founded an Academy of Theology in Ternate. The first lectures were held on 28 January 1968, and this date is commemorated as the institution's anniversary. Initially, the academy admitted only graduates of junior high school (SMP) or equivalent to be trained as church workers. In 1985, the Academy of Theology became Sekolah Tinggi Teologi (STT) GMIH, a theological college. It joined The Association for Theological Education in South East Asia (ATESEA), headquartered in Manila, Philippines, and the Perhimpunan Sekolah-Sekolah Teologi se-Indonesia (PERSETIA), headquartered in Jakarta. The 23rd GMIH Synod in 1992, held in Daruba-Morotai, decided that STT GMIH should be developed into a university. Responding to this decision, in 2006 Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Kristen Halmahera began designing a development scenario for transforming STT GMIH into a university. This included comparative studies, feasibility studies, preparation of a final development draft, and submission of an application for a higher education operating license to the Department of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. The long effort to establish a university that would answer the region's human resource needs was resolved when the Minister of National Education issued Decree No. 200/D/O/2008 on 22 September 2008 concerning the granting of permission to operate new study programs and the change of form of STT GMIH into Universitas Halmahera. Universitas Halmahera began its first classes on 1 September 2008, while the official inauguration ceremony was held on 11 October 2008 by the Director General of Higher Education of the Department of National Education, represented by the Coordinator of Kopertis Region XII. Today Universitas Halmahera has four faculties, 13 undergraduate study programs, and 2 master's study programs, all accredited by BAN-PT. The university continues to operate under the management of Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Kristen Halmahera, serving North Maluku and eastern Indonesia with a mission that combines Christian values, character formation, and regional relevance.
