Overview

Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika Bandung is an Indonesian private higher-education institution based in Bandung, West Java, and is part of the wider Bina Sarana Informatika (BSI) education group. The BSI movement began on 3 March 1988 with the founding of Lembaga Pendidikan Komputer Bina Sarana Informatika (LPK BSI) in Depok by Mayjen (Purn) HR. Harsoyo. Over the following decades the organisation expanded from computer training into a family of academies and polytechnic programmes, and on 16 September 2018 BSI formally transformed into Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. The Bandung campus operates within that university structure and is presented to the public under the ARS University brand, with the official site at ars.ac.id. The institution positions itself as a career-oriented campus with a strong international dimension. Its official homepage promotes the "Go International with ARS" programme, which offers internships, work placement, Ausbildung (vocational training), and scholarship pathways to countries including Japan, Germany, Taiwan, Korea, and Kuwait. It also advertises scholarship schemes for new students for the 2026/2027 academic year, with tuition discounts of up to 100% for academic achievers, non-academic achievers, athletes, tahfidz students, and content creators. The site states that the university has been trusted by thousands of students and global industry partners, citing an institutional accreditation of "Baik Sekali" (Very Good), more than 20 international partners, over 5,000 successful alumni, and global certification programmes. Academically, the Bandung campus is organised around faculties that reflect the group's applied, technology-and-business heritage. Publicly listed leadership includes Rector Prof. Dr. H. As a private, foundation-owned institution, it is not listed on a stock exchange; it is governed by Yayasan Bina Sarana Informatika and operates as part of the BSI education network that traces its roots to the 1988 computer-training school.

History

The history of Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika Bandung is inseparable from the history of the Bina Sarana Informatika (BSI) education group. BSI began on 3 March 1988, when Mayjen (Purn) HR. Harsoyo founded Lembaga Pendidikan Komputer Bina Sarana Informatika (LPK BSI) in Depok. The institution was established to provide computer education at a time when information technology skills were becoming increasingly important in Indonesia. In October 1989 the BSI head office moved to Jakarta, and a second LPK BSI branch was opened, followed by further branches across Jakarta to reach more students. In 1990 BSI established Politeknik BSI with a Computer Accounting major, admitting its first cohort in the 1990/1991 academic year. Programmes in Informatics Management, Computer Engineering, Secretarial Studies, and Office Management followed in the 1992/1993 academic year, alongside a name change from Politeknik BSI to Program Satu Tahun Bina Sarana Informatika. In the 1994 academic year BSI founded the Akademi Manajemen Informatika & Komputer (AMIK) on Jalan RS. Fatmawati in South Jakarta — now the Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika Fatmawati campus — with AMIK BSI beginning operations in the 1994/1995 academic year after receiving its operating licence. BSI then established the Akademi Sekretaris & Manajemen in the 2000/2001 academic year with two study programmes, Secretarial and Administrative Management. BSI broadened its academic scope in the 2002/2003 academic year by founding the Akademi Bahasa Asing (foreign language academy) and the Akademi Komunikasi (communication academy), moving beyond computer-focused education. It also established the Akademi Pariwisata (tourism academy) and the Akademi Manajemen Keuangan (finance management academy). As a result, BSI operated a family of academies including AMIK, ASM, ABA, AKOM, AKPAR, and AMK. This multi-academy structure formed the institutional base from which the Bandung campus and other campuses would later operate. A major turning point came on 16 September 2018, when Bina Sarana Informatika officially transformed into Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. The decree changing BSI's status to a university was handed over by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education at the BSI Convention Center. This transformation consolidated the group's academies into a university structure with faculties, enabling the institution to offer broader undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Bandung campus, presented publicly under the ARS University brand at ars.ac.id, is part of this post-2018 university network. In its current phase, the Bandung campus emphasises internationalisation. Its official homepage promotes the "Go International with ARS" programme, offering internship, work placement, Ausbildung, and scholarship pathways to Japan, Germany, Taiwan, Korea, and Kuwait, and advertises scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year with tuition discounts of up to 100%. The site also cites institutional accreditation of "Baik Sekali" (Very Good), more than 20 international partners, over 5,000 alumni, and global certification programmes, reflecting the campus's positioning as a career-oriented, internationally connected institution within the BSI education group.
