Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang, commonly known as Untag Semarang, is a private higher education institution based in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. It was founded in 1963 under the name Universitas Nasional (Unnas) by the independence-era figures Gunadi Wirjono, S.H. and Soemario, who served as founders, pioneers and leaders. The institution was established on the principle of nationalism and was supported by lecturers from state universities of the time, including Universitas Diponegoro. In 1964 the Yayasan Pembina Pendidikan 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang was formally established by notarial deed, and by the end of that year the name was changed to Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Semarang. The university is accredited B and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across several faculties. These include the Faculty of Law (S1 Law, S2 Master of Law, S2 Master of Notary, S3 Doctor of Law), the Faculty of Economics and Business (S1 Management, S1 Accounting, S1 Digital Business, S2 Master of Management), the Faculty of Engineering (S1 Civil Engineering, S1 Chemical Engineering, S1 Architecture), the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (S1 Public Administration, S1 Business Administration, S2 Master of Public Administration), the Faculty of Agricultural Technology (S1 Food Product Technology), and the Faculty of Language and Culture (S1 English, S1 Japanese, S1 Education of Belief in God Almighty). It also operates an employee class for working students. Untag Semarang is part of a family of Indonesian universities sharing the 17 August 1945 name, alongside Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Jakarta, Surabaya and Samarinda. It has cooperation with Universitas Tunku Abdul Rahman. As a private institution, it is overseen by its founding foundation rather than by the state, and it continues to serve students in Semarang and the wider Central Java region.

History

Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang was founded in 1963 under the name Universitas Nasional (Unnas). Its establishment was driven by the independence-era figures Gunadi Wirjono, S.H. and Soemario, who acted as founders, pioneers and leaders. From the outset the institution was conceived as a higher education body based on nationalism, and it was supported by lecturers from state universities then operating in the region, including Universitas Diponegoro. On 23 March 1964, the Yayasan Pembina Pendidikan 17 Agustus 1945 Semarang was legalized through Notarial Deed No. 62 of Notary R.M. Soeprapto, becoming the body that fostered and administered Unnas Semarang. At the end of 1964, the founders and supporters changed the name from Unnas Semarang to Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Semarang, the name by which it is known today. The university also opened an employee class for those already working. Over time the institution developed a faculty structure spanning law, economics and business, engineering, social and political sciences, agricultural technology, and language and culture, offering programs at undergraduate (S1), master's (S2) and doctoral (S3) levels. It is accredited B. It shares the 17 August 1945 name with sister universities in Jakarta, Surabaya and Samarinda, and has cooperation with Universitas Tunku Abdul Rahman.
