History

In the 1950s, Ecuador, under the government of Galo Plaza Lasso, entered a process of modernization, responding to the technological advances of Latin America. In this context, and taking into account that Ecuador and the province of Manabí were eminently agricultural and livestock-raising, it was necessary to create a higher-education institution that would offer professionals meeting the academic demands of the province and the country. Thus Universidad Técnica de Manabí was created through the leadership of Dr. Julio Marín, a deputy for Manabí, and the support of the Manabí figures Emilio Bowen Roggiero and Silvio Mora Bowen, under the government of Dr. José María Velasco Ibarra, by Legislative Decree of 29 October 1952. President Velasco Ibarra gave the corresponding executive order on 21 November 1952; however, the university did not begin its work until 25 June 1954, and it is this latter date on which its creation anniversary is actually commemorated. The first rector of the institution was Ing. Paulo Emilio Macías Sabando, by Agreement No. 407 signed by the President of the Republic. Ing. Paulo Emilio Macías is recognized as the architect of the university because he made the project a reality through brilliant management that brought prestige to the alma mater internationally. UTM was created with the Faculties of Agricultural Engineering and Veterinary Medicine, with the programs of Agronomic Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine. Today the institution is accredited within Ecuador's Higher Education System for a period of five years by resolution of the Council for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (CACES), and it appears in rankings such as QS, QS World University Ranking, Scimago (SJR), Webometrics, and Times Higher Education.
