Overview
The Universidad Nacional del Santa (UNS) is a Peruvian public university created on 20 December 1984 by Law No. 24035, with its seat in the city of Chimbote. It is located in the district of Nuevo Chimbote, in the department of Áncash. The university currently has four faculties: Engineering, Sciences, Education and Humanities, and Law and Political Sciences. The push for a university in Chimbote began in the 1960s, when a group of students, mainly from Chimbote studying in Lima and Trujillo, mobilized to request the creation of a university in the city. On 18 August 1976, a commission was designated to draft a creation project, which was approved by the Provincial Council of Santa on 16 September 1976. In October 1981, President Fernando Belaúnde Terry offered to create a national university in Chimbote during the inauguration of the Hospital Regional "Eleazar Guzmán Barrón". In early 1982, the National Interuniversity Commission (CONAI) appointed a special commission to study the creation of a national university in Chimbote, chaired by Dr. Francisco Morales Ayala, which presented its report on 30 November 1982. Land was allocated in October and November 1982 for the future university campus and administrative offices. The university was formally created on 20 December 1984. Its first Organizing Commission was appointed by CONAI Resolution No. 4994 on 20 December 1984 and was installed and sworn in on 27 January 1985. In 1987, the first admission competition was held for the professional programs of Energy Engineering and Agroindustrial Engineering, with 101 applicants admitted. In 1989, after the resignation of Dr. Francisco Morales Ayala, Dr. Eduardo Gallardo García was named president. A new organizing commission was appointed in 1990, and during that period seven more professional schools were created, bringing the total to ten. In 1994, another organizing commission was appointed, and the university continued its academic and social projection work. Today, UNS is a state-owned higher education institution serving the Áncash region and Peru, with its official website at uns.edu.pe.
History
The Universidad Nacional del Santa (UNS) was created on 20 December 1984 by Law No. 24035, with its seat in the city of Chimbote. It is located in the district of Nuevo Chimbote, department of Áncash, Peru. The origins of the university date back to the late 1950s, when Chimbote underwent a process of industrialization that accelerated population growth. The existence of rich marine potential and the installation and construction of the Cañón del Pato Hydroelectric Plant attracted many families to emigrate to the area. In the 1960s, when the country had 20 national universities and 10 private ones, a group of students, mainly from Chimbote studying at universities in Lima and Trujillo, organized and mobilized to request the government to create a university in Chimbote. On 18 August 1976, through the inspection of culture and tourism of the Provincial Council of Santa, a commission was designated to draft a project for the creation of the university for Chimbote, which was approved in a Council session on 16 September 1976. On 10 October 1981, President Fernando Belaúnde Terry, during the inauguration of the Hospital Regional "Eleazar Guzmán Barrón" in Chimbote, offered before the pressure of the crowd to create a national university based in Chimbote. In early 1982, the National Interuniversity Commission (CONAI), at the request of the President of the Republic, appointed by Resolution No. 2254 and 2643 of 1982-CONAI a special commission to conduct a study for the creation of a national university in Chimbote, composed of university professors and personalities from Chimbote. This commission, chaired by Dr. Francisco Morales Ayala, professor at the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, presented its report to the president of CONAI on 30 November 1982, titled "Estudio de Creación de la Universidad Nacional del Santa." The commission also promoted the formation of an Organizing Commission of the Foundation for the Development of the Universidad Nacional del Santa, which managed the creation of the university. In October 1982, competent institutions allocated a plot of approximately 30 hectares in Urb. Bellamar for the future university city, and in November 1982, CORDE ANCASH, in the Chimbote Land Terminal and Services Project, reserved a 1000 m² plot for the administrative offices of the future university. On 20 December 1984, Law No. 24035 was enacted, ordering the creation of the Universidad Nacional del Santa, based in the city of Chimbote. The first Organizing Commission was appointed by Resolution No. 4994-CONAI of 20 December 1984. It was installed and sworn in on 27 January 1985. From that date, it began its complex and delicate work of organizing and implementing the university. After the impasse of forming the COUNS, on 2 September 1985, the commission was composed of Dr. Francisco Morales de Ayala as president, Dr. Eduardo Gallardo García as academic vice president, and Dr. Huberto Noriega Tirado as administrative vice president. In 1987, the first admission competition was called for the professional programs of Energy Engineering and Agroindustrial Engineering, with a total of 101 applicants admitted. The curricula of these programs were prepared by the first seven selected professors, under the advice of professors from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México and specialists from Peruvian universities. Due to the characteristics, aims, and objectives of UNS at that time, the self-instructional method through self-learning modules was applied in the teaching-learning process. In March 1989, due to the resignation of Dr. Francisco Morales Ayala, Dr. Eduardo Gallardo García was appointed president, with Ing. Víctor Bravo Charcap as academic vice president and Dr. Huberto Noriega Tirado as administrative vice president. During the first two government periods, most of the physical infrastructure that exists today on the university campus and administrative offices was built. By Resolution No. 282-90-ANR, a new organizing commission was appointed, composed of Dr. Juan Manuel Cisneros Navarrete as president, Dr. Marco Antonio Barboza as academic vice president, and Ing. Carlos Armas Ramírez as administrative vice president, who from October 1990 to February 1994 fulfilled the work of organization and implementation. During this government period, the university experienced accelerated academic growth, creating seven more professional schools, totaling ten professional programs. Dr. Marco Antonio Barboza resigned on 22 October 1992, and the commission continued with two members until 7 June 1993, when Ms. Paulino Vivas Alejos, principal professor at the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, took charge of the academic vice presidency, by virtue of Resolution No. 428-93-ANR of 25 May 1993. By Resolution No. 835-94-ANR of 3 February 1994, a new organizing commission was appointed, composed of Dr. Saniel Lozano Alvarado as President, Ms. Ulises Calderón Infantes as academic vice president, and Economist Enrique Rodríguez Rodríguez as administrative vice president, all principal professors of the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo. One of the highlights of this stage was the presence of the new university in the community through social projection.
