Overview
The Universidad Nacional de Tumbes (UNT) is the principal public higher education institution in the Tumbes region of Peru. It was founded on 23 June 1984 by Law No. 23881 during the government of President Fernando Belaúnde Terry, building on earlier academic programs that had been offered in Tumbes since the 1970s under the auspices of the Universidad Nacional de Piura. The university holds institutional licensing from SUNEDU, Peru's national higher education regulator. UNT operates several campuses in and around the city of Tumbes. Its main university city is located in the Pampa Grande populated center in Tumbes District. The Faculty of Economic Sciences is in the San José neighborhood, the Faculty of Fisheries Engineering and Marine Sciences is in the Puerto Pizarro populated center, and the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences is in Corrales District. The university offers 21 undergraduate programs grouped into six faculties: Health Sciences, Agrarian Sciences, Fisheries Engineering and Marine Sciences, Economic Sciences, Social Sciences, and Law and Political Sciences. As a public university, UNT is funded primarily by the Peruvian state and is overseen by the Ministry of Education through SUNEDU. It is active in regional development, with research and social projection activities including projects on circular economy in agroindustry and renewable energy, supported by contracts with PROCIENCIA and the World Bank. The university also has a sports club that competes in regional and national tournaments, including the Copa Perú football tournament. UNT's academic offerings span health, agriculture, engineering, business, social sciences, and law, reflecting the economic and social needs of the Tumbes region. The university regularly publishes admission results, procurement notices, and institutional resolutions on its official website. It is recognized among Peru's licensed universities and appears in international university rankings, typically within the middle third nationally.
History
The history of the Universidad Nacional de Tumbes (UNT) is linked to the preliminary steps that led to the creation of a branch of the Universidad Nacional de Piura in Tumbes on 22 December 1972. The then National Council of the Peruvian University (CONUP) transcribed a letter from the Ministry of Fisheries requesting that the Universidad Nacional de Piura give its opinion on the operation of a Fisheries program in the city of Tumbes. This request led to the appointment of a multisectoral commission to conduct a socioeconomic study of Tumbes. On 4 July 1975, the commission presented its report proposing the creation of a branch of the Universidad Técnica de Piura in Tumbes, which was approved by that university. On 10 July, the operation of the branch was proposed before the Zonal Development Sub-Committee of Tumbes, and the Pro-Branch board was formed, responsible for studying infrastructure and human resources. Its results were presented to the President of the Reorganizing and Government Commission of the Universidad Nacional de Piura, to CONUP, and to the relevant ministry. In March 1976, the academic programs of Agronomy, Accounting, and Fisheries Engineering were inaugurated. On 8 September 1980, the then Deputy for Tumbes, Dr. Armando Mendoza Flores, presented bill No. 213 on the creation of the Universidad Nacional de Tumbes, which was elevated to the Commission of Universities, Science and Culture of the Chamber of Deputies. This Commission issued a favorable opinion on 30 September of the same year. Later, in 1984, a series of activities and pronouncements led to the enactment of Law No. 23881, which created the Universidad Nacional de Tumbes, promulgated on 23 June 1984. Immediately, an admission competition was called for the careers of Agronomy, Fisheries Engineering, Accounting, and Health Sciences. The latter began its activities based on studies carried out in the university creation project, with these studies later regularized, as well as the creation of this last faculty, through the modification of the creation law to Law No. 24894, promulgated on 30 September 1988. Since its founding, UNT has expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure. It now has six faculties and 21 undergraduate programs. The university has also engaged in research and social projection, including projects on circular economy in agroindustry and renewable energy, supported by PROCIENCIA and the World Bank.
