Overview
The Universidad Nacional de Huancavelica (UNH), also known in English as the National University of Huancavelica, is a public university based in the city of Huancavelica, Peru, specifically in the Paturpampa sector. It is one of the main higher education institutions in the region and plays an important role in professional training and local development. The university was created by Law No. 25265, promulgated on 20 June 1990, during the government of Alan García Pérez. It began operations with faculties of Engineering Sciences, Education, and Nursing, and was recognized as the first decentralized Peruvian university. Its academic programs were designed to serve not only the department of Huancavelica but also its provinces, with offerings such as Agronomy in Acobamba, Mining in Lircay (Angaraes), and Electronics in Pampas (Tayacaja). The official installation took place on Sunday, 14 October 1990, and the first stone of the university campus in Paturpampa was laid on 28 April 1991. Academic activities began on 4 April 1992 with 860 students. After years of operation, student protests in 2000 led to the authorization of the definitive institutionalization process, granting the university full autonomy. In 2019, the National Superintendence of Higher University Education (SUNEDU) granted institutional licensing, certifying compliance with basic quality conditions. Today, UNH has 9 faculties and research institutes in engineering, health, and social sciences. It is regularly ranked in the middle third among Peru's 92 licensed universities in certain international rankings.
History
The Universidad Nacional de Huancavelica (UNH) was established through Law No. 25265, promulgated on 20 June 1990, during the government of Alan García Pérez. The law was the culmination of efforts dating back to the late 19th century to create a university in the department of Huancavelica, with proposals advanced during the government of General Manuel A. Odría and continued into the first Aprista regime. Congressman Dr. Moisés Tambini del Valle presented the bill that led to its creation. The university began with faculties of Engineering Sciences, Education, and Nursing, and was recognized as the first decentralized Peruvian university. Its academic programs were distributed across the department: Agronomy in Acobamba, Mining in Lircay (Angaraes), and Electronics in Pampas (Tayacaja). The official installation took place on Sunday, 14 October 1990, with the presence of local authorities, members of the National Assembly of Rectors commission, and numerous citizens. On 28 April 1991, the first stone of the university campus was laid in Paturpampa, sponsored by engineer Alberto Benavides de la Quintana. Academic activities began on 4 April 1992 with 860 students in Huancavelica and the decentralized branches. In 2000, after years of operation, students led by the Federation of Students of the National University of Huancavelica (FEUNH) protested the prolonged delay in institutionalization. Actions included the occupation of premises and constant demonstrations; on 9 June a massive march to the National Assembly of Rectors in Lima took place. As a result, on 22 June the definitive institutionalization process was authorized with a 100-day deadline, allowing the university to achieve autonomy. Today, UNH exercises full normative, governmental, academic, administrative, and economic autonomy. In recent years, it has undergone institutional licensing by SUNEDU, granted on 12 June 2019, certifying compliance with basic quality conditions. The university currently has 9 faculties and research institutes in engineering sciences, health sciences, and social sciences. It is regularly ranked in the middle third among Peru's 92 licensed universities in certain international rankings.
