Overview

Universidad Madero de Puebla (UMAD) is a private higher-education institution located in San Andrés Cholula, Puebla, Mexico, about 120 kilometers from Mexico City. It traces its origins to the Instituto Mexicano Madero (IMM), an educational arm of the Iglesia Metodista de México (Methodist Church of Mexico). In 1982, the IMM expanded into higher education by founding the Escuela Superior de Contaduría y Administración, which initially operated with curricula affiliated with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The school gained university status in 1986 and later separated from UNAM in 1990, registering its programs with Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). UMAD operates two campuses: the main Campus Puebla, situated on Camino Real a Cholula, and the Campus Papaloapan in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, established in 1998. The university offers 29 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate programs—39 academic programs in total—in both on-campus and online modalities, along with continuing-education workshops and diplomas. Its academic offerings span business, engineering, health sciences, and social sciences, and it emphasizes values-based education, social responsibility, and innovation. UMAD is accredited by FIMPES (Federación de Instituciones Mexicanas Particulares de Educación Superior) and has held ISO 9001 certification. It is also a participant in the SAP University Alliance Program, being the first university in Puebla and one of the first in Mexico to implement it at the undergraduate level. The university is part of the Sistema Educativo Madero, which includes the Instituto Mexicano Madero and other educational levels. It maintains a scholarship program to support students with academic potential but limited financial resources, as well as a donation program to fund educational opportunities. Its sports teams are known as the Tigres Blancos (White Tigers), a mascot chosen in 1999. UMAD competes in student sports organizations such as CONADEIP, with notable achievements in basketball, athletics, and American football. The institution continues to expand its academic portfolio and infrastructure, including a Sports Center and virtual campus initiatives.

History

The Universidad Madero de Puebla originated from the Instituto Mexicano Madero (IMM), an educational institution of the Iglesia Metodista de México. In 1982, the IMM expanded into higher education by establishing the Escuela Superior de Contaduría y Administración. On August 18, 1982, a press conference was held to formally announce the opening of the school, which was initially incorporated into the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Classes began on September 6, 1982, at the institute's facilities on 17 Poniente, and the official inauguration took place on September 24, 1982, with study plans and programs from UNAM. In 1986, the school acquired the rank of "University." In 1990, the Universidad Madero separated from UNAM and registered its programs with the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). In December 1991, construction began on the Campus Puebla, located on Camino Real a Cholula. In 1998, the Campus Papaloapan was established in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca. Throughout its history, UMAD has achieved several milestones. In 1997, it received the Regional "Mérito Exportador" Award and the National Export Award. In 1998, it again received the Regional "Mérito Exportador" Award. In 1999, it acquired the Centro Universitario del Papaloapan, now known as UMAD Campus Papaloapan. In 2002, it received FIMPES accreditation. In 2003, it won first place in "la tesis del millón" with a thesis on tourism marketing strategies. In 2006, the UMAD Campus Papaloapan was inaugurated in Tuxtepec, Oaxaca. In 2007 and 2008, it received ISO recertification. In 2008, it was also recognized as a "University of Excellence." In 2010, UMAD became the first university in Puebla and one of the few nationally to successfully implement the SAP University Alliance Program at the undergraduate level. In 2010, it also won the CONADEIP national championship in women's basketball. In 2011, it earned two gold, six silver, and three bronze medals in athletics, as well as the National Men's Basketball Championship in the First Force category and runner-up in juvenile American football "C." In 2012, it inaugurated the Sports Center and began work on the Virtual Campus, and won the National Women's Basketball Championship in the first force category. In 2013, it became the first university in Latin America to receive recognition from SAP University Alliance and implemented the Ki Wo Tsu Kau methodology as a continuous improvement policy. In 2015, it presented a self-study under effectiveness criteria to obtain FIMPES accreditation. Today, UMAD offers 29 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate programs, totaling 39 academic programs across its two campuses, in both on-campus and online modalities, as well as non-schooled courses in workshops and diplomas coordinated by Continuing Education. The Campus Puebla is located near the archaeological zone of Cholula and is minutes away from shopping centers and major roads. The university's mascot, the Tigre Blanco (White Tiger), was chosen in 1999 through a contest involving the university community, inspired by the birth of the first white tiger in captivity at a Puebla zoo.
