History

The Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana was established as part of the Jesuit educational tradition in Mexico. In 1981, Father Alfonso C. González Quevedo y Bruzón, S.J., was placed in charge of the future institution. In 1982, the Plantel Noroeste of the Universidad Iberoamericana was officially created. Initially, the facilities were divided: a rented locale was used, along with part of the installations of Colegio La Paz. Later, the university moved to what had once been the city's Civil Hospital for its undergraduate programs, while the high school (Bachillerato) was relocated to a rented building in Playas de Tijuana. In its early years, the university offered only the Bachillerato and undergraduate degrees in Architecture, Graphic Design, and Law. In 1985, the first stone was laid for the building that would symbolize the institution's campus. Over the following decades, IBERO Tijuana expanded its academic offerings and consolidated its campus in Playas de Tijuana. It became the only provincial Ibero that depends directly on the Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México, and it is part of the Sistema Universitario Jesuita (SUJ), which includes IBERO CDMX, ITESO, IBERO León, IBERO Puebla, ISIA, and IBERO Torreón, among others. The university has distinguished itself for more than three decades by its Jesuit educational model, unique in the region. In recent years, the Mexican Province of the Society of Jesus decided to integrate the Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México and Tijuana with the objective of strengthening institutional development and promoting IBERO Tijuana as one of the best universities in northwestern Mexico. This new stage involves programs, strategies, and actions to make the university more competitive and dynamic, and a development plan to strengthen academic and administrative structures, valuing the accumulated experience and contributions of different actors. The university continues to offer 100% on-campus undergraduate and graduate programs, national and international exchanges, and is active in research, community engagement, and professional formation, as evidenced by recent doctoral graduations, forums on health care, and partnerships with professional organizations.
