History
The Universidad de Camagüey "Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz" was founded on 6 November 1967, becoming the first university established after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. Its initial studies were in agronomic engineering at the Instituto de la Caña "Alvaro Barba Machado" and pedagogy at the Instituto Ferroviario "Cándido González"; both specialties were later moved to the Finca San Isidro on the outskirts of Camagüey. In 1972, it was constituted as a university center, and by 1974 these programs were operating at the current main campus, then under construction. In 1975, it was officially declared a university by Law 1294 of the Council of Ministers. During the 1970s and 1980s, other universities emerged from the Universidad de Camagüey, including the Universidad Médica Carlos J. Finlay, the Universidad Pedagógica José Martí, the Universidad de Ciego de Ávila Máximo Gómez Báez, and the Universidad de Las Tunas "Vladimir Ilich Lenin". The 1980s marked material and human development for the academic community. In the 1990s, despite national difficulties, the UC maintained its teaching, research, and production activities. At the beginning of the 21st century, the UC joined the universalization of higher education promoted by the Revolution, creating university branches in the 13 municipalities of the province, now known as Municipal University Centers (CUM). On 8 June 2010, the university was named "Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz" in honor of the Camagüey patriot Ignacio Agramonte, the most important hero of the province in the struggle for independence from Spanish rule. In 2012, the university celebrated its 45th anniversary. In June 2014, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba approved the integration of the existing Universidad de Camagüey "Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz" with the Universidad de Ciencias Pedagógicas "José Martí" and the Universidad de Ciencias de la Cultura Física y el Deporte "Comandante Manuel Fajardo" of Camagüey province. The new university comprises 10 faculties, 52 degree programs, and an enrollment of more than 15,000 students in the 2020-2021 academic year. It is attached to the Ministry of Higher Education (MES). The university has three campuses in the city of Camagüey and municipal university centers in all 13 municipalities. It publishes seven scientific journals: Revista de Producción Animal (founded 1985), Retos de la Dirección (founded 2007), Transformación, Agrisost (founded 1995), Monteverdia, Arcada, and Ciencia y Deporte.
