History

The Universidad Católica de Pereira was born from the initiative of a group of young people seeking a different and innovative education in the city of Pereira. This led to the creation of the Fundación Autónoma Popular del Risaralda, which offered programs in Law and Industrial Economics. In 1973, this group of students asked the then Coadjutor Bishop of Pereira, Monseñor Darío Castrillón Hoyos, to serve as rector of the institution, and he accepted. Subsequently, the Diocese of Pereira proposed replacing the foundation with the creation of a university, to be named 'Universidad Católica Popular del Risaralda', with its direction entrusted to the Diocese. Thus, on 14 February 1975, by Decree No. 865 issued by the Diocese of Pereira, the university was officially created. In 2011, it adopted its current name: Universidad Católica de Pereira. The university has since grown to offer 13 undergraduate and 24 graduate programs, and several of its programs have received high-quality accreditation from the Ministry of National Education, making it the private university with the most accredited programs in the department of Risaralda.
