Overview

Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Xochimilco (commonly UAM Xochimilco or UAM-X) is one of the five academic units of the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), a public autonomous university in Mexico. Located in the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City, UAM-X was established in 1974 as part of a national initiative to create a new kind of public university detached from the student movements of 1968. The unit is distinguished by its 'modular system' (sistema modular), an educational model that organizes learning around concrete social problems (objetos de transformación) rather than traditional disciplinary courses. This approach emphasizes interdisciplinary study, critical thinking, and social commitment. UAM-X offers 18 undergraduate programs and 26 postgraduate programs across three divisions: Biological and Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Arts and Design. The campus is known for its strong links with communities and its focus on applied research that addresses national problems. The institutional emblem, designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez in 1974, features interlinked initials in a DNA-like segment, symbolizing flexibility and openness to knowledge. The campus mascot is the black panther, associated with its American football team. As a public institution, UAM-X is tuition-free and funded by the Mexican federal government. It operates under the general coordination of the UAM Rectoría General and is led by a unit rector (rectora de unidad). The current rectora, as of 2026, has issued agreements to strengthen a culture of peace and to guide the use of artificial intelligence in academic activities. The campus continues to uphold its vision of being a national and international reference for its educational model and its contribution to social development.

History

The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) was an initiative of Víctor Bravo Ahúja, Secretary of Education during the presidency of Luis Echeverría Álvarez. It emerged from the government's need for a large university that would not be linked to the history of the 1968 student movements in Mexico. The Xochimilco unit was conceived with a distinct educational philosophy. Ramón Villarreal, identified as the 'ideologue of UAM-Xochimilco' and its first rector, was an international official and worker at the Pan American Health Organization. Together with leftist academics, he developed the 'Documento Xochimilco', a treatise that incorporated Jean Piaget's concepts in the conception of the research object. Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, general rector of UAM, approved the document. The institutional emblem was developed by the first general rector of UAM, the prominent Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, in 1974. The emblem is a stylization of the university's anagram, presenting the linked initials of the institution in a kind of DNA chain segment. Below the anagram is the university's motto. The emblem represents the institution as a flexible university open to all knowledge and historical transformations, while also symbolizing a stable and solid institution. The UAM mascot is the black panther, which is also the name of the university's American football team in the Mexican American football league. UAM Xochimilco was established as one of the five units of UAM, alongside Azcapotzalco, Iztapalapa, Cuajimalpa, and Lerma. From its founding, the unit adopted the 'modular system' as its distinctive pedagogical model. This system organizes teaching and learning around concrete problems of reality (objetos de transformación) to achieve mastery of professional practices. It recognizes that reality cannot be apprehended from a unidisciplinary vision and attempts its analysis through multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives. The object of transformation is a significant problem of reality corresponding to possible activities of the future professional, which the university decides to incorporate into the teaching-learning system due to its relevance and pertinence for student formation within a realistic vision of the country's needs. Around each object of transformation, teaching-learning units called modules are structured and taken in a trimester. Over the decades, UAM-X has grown to offer 18 undergraduate programs and 26 postgraduate programs. It has maintained its commitment to linking education with socially defined problems, seeking to establish new relationships between the fundamental elements of education and the university tasks of generation, transmission, application, and dissemination of knowledge. The campus is located in the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City, and its academic activities are organized into three divisions: Biological and Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Arts and Design. The unit is led by a rectora (as of 2026), who has recently issued agreements to create academic commissions on the use of artificial intelligence and on strengthening a culture of peace and preventing violence. UAM-X continues to uphold its vision of being a national and international reference for its educational model and its contribution to social development.
