Overview
Universal Robina Corporation, commonly abbreviated as URC, is a Philippine food and beverage manufacturer and distributor headquartered in Quezon City. It is a core subsidiary of JG Summit Holdings, a diversified Philippine conglomerate listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. URC is among the Philippines' largest food and beverage companies and competes across snacks, beverages, coffee, instant foods, confectionery, biscuits, and food ingredients. The company traces its origins to September 28, 1954, when John Gokongwei Jr. established Universal Corn Products. The original business was built around corn milling and the production of glucose and cornstarch. This industrial base later supported expansion into consumer foods and, through related businesses, contributed to the vertical integration of the wider Gokongwei group. Robina Farms began poultry operations in 1963, while Robichem Laboratories was subsequently established to serve veterinary requirements associated with the farming businesses. Robina Farms later expanded into pig production during the 1970s. URC's consumer-foods development accelerated in the 1960s. Consolidated Food Corporation, later known as CFC Corporation, was established in 1961 and introduced Blend 45 instant coffee. The brand became a major local competitor in the Philippine instant-coffee market. During the latter part of that decade, the business introduced Presto products in chocolate and powdered-drink categories and later developed Nips chocolate candies. These initiatives helped establish the portfolio approach that remains central to URC: combining locally developed mass-market brands with licensed, partnered, and acquired products. The company is particularly associated with the Jack 'n Jill portfolio, which spans salty snacks, biscuits, confectionery, and other everyday grocery products. Its beverage and coffee businesses include C2 ready-to-drink tea and Great Taste coffee. URC has also manufactured or distributed products associated with Nissin and other international partners, while its ingredients activities connect the company to food manufacturers as well as household consumers. International expansion has been an important part of URC's growth. The company has operated manufacturing facilities in several Asian markets and maintains distribution or sales activities beyond its production footprint. In Oceania, it acquired New Zealand biscuit maker Griffin's Foods in 2014 and Snack Brands Australia in 2016. It subsequently formed Unisnack ANZ with Intersnack in 2019, consolidating the two Oceania businesses, before selling its interest to Intersnack in 2021. In 2021, URC also agreed to acquire Malaysian snack producer Munchy's from CVC Capital Partners. URC has participated in joint ventures with multinational and regional food companies. In 2014 it announced a Philippine beverage-production and distribution joint venture with Danone, and it established a local manufacturing joint venture with Calbee. The Calbee arrangement ended in 2018 when Calbee sold its shares to URC. These partnerships reflected URC's strategy of using local manufacturing, distribution, and market knowledge to broaden its product range. The company is also notable for its historical connection to Philippine basketball. URC owned the Great Taste Coffee Makers franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association from the league's inaugural 1975 season until 1992. The team won six PBA championships before URC sold the franchise to Sta. Lucia Realty. Today, URC remains primarily a branded food and beverage group, with a business model built on high-volume consumer products, manufacturing scale, regional distribution, and a portfolio of Philippine and international brands.
History
Universal Robina began on September 28, 1954, when John Gokongwei Jr. founded Universal Corn Products, or UCP. The first operation was a corn-milling plant producing glucose and cornstarch. This origin gave the company experience in food processing and ingredients before it developed a broad branded-consumer-products portfolio. The Gokongwei group's move toward vertical integration continued in 1963, when Robina Farms began poultry operations. The farming business could ultimately source feed from the group's food-ingredient activities. Robichem Laboratories was later created to provide veterinary products and services for the farms. During the 1970s, Robina Farms expanded into piggery operations, extending the group's presence across agricultural inputs and food production. A major consumer-products step came in 1961 with the establishment of Consolidated Food Corporation, later called CFC Corporation. Its first product was Blend 45 instant coffee. The brand achieved strong local-market recognition and became a significant competitor to established coffee products. URC then moved into chocolate and confectionery through the Presto brand, including cocoa powder, powdered chocolate beverages, and confectionery. Nips chocolate candies followed and became a familiar children's product in the Philippines. Over time, the businesses associated with Universal Corn Products, CFC, and the wider Gokongwei group developed into a large food and beverage organization. URC's portfolio expanded beyond ingredients and coffee into snacks, biscuits, noodles, confectionery, ready-to-drink beverages, and other packaged foods. Jack 'n Jill became one of the company's central consumer-facing portfolios, while C2 and Great Taste strengthened its beverage and coffee presence. URC also produced or distributed products connected with international brands and partnerships, including Nissin. The company's international development included manufacturing facilities in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia, in addition to its Philippine operations. URC also maintained distribution arrangements in Laos and Cambodia and sales offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. Its Oceania expansion began with the 2014 acquisition of Griffin's Foods in New Zealand and continued with the 2016 acquisition of Snack Brands Australia. In December 2019, URC and Intersnack combined these businesses in Unisnack ANZ. URC later sold its interest to Intersnack in August 2021. Partnerships have formed another recurring element of URC's history. In 2014 the company announced a joint venture with Danone for beverage production and distribution in the Philippines. That year it also established a local manufacturing joint venture with Calbee. The Calbee venture was terminated in 2018 after Calbee sold its shares to URC. In November 2021, URC agreed to purchase Munchy's, a Malaysian snack company, from CVC Capital Partners, reinforcing its regional snack-food strategy. URC also has a place in Philippine sports history. Its Great Taste Coffee Makers franchise competed in the Philippine Basketball Association from the league's inaugural season in 1975 through 1992. The team won six PBA championships. URC subsequently sold the franchise to Sta. Lucia Realty. The company's continuing identity is principally that of a branded food and beverage group, combining mass-market Philippine products with regional manufacturing, distribution, partnerships, and acquisitions.
