Overview

UniverGas Italia is an Italian company active in the domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector. It originated as TotalGaz Italia, the entity within the TotalErg group that handled domestic LPG activities. When the Italian fuel group TotalErg was acquired by Gruppo API in 2018, TotalGaz Italia was carved out and sold to UGI Corporation, and it was subsequently renamed UniverGas Italia. The company therefore represents the continuation of the domestic LPG business that had previously been operated under the Total/TotalErg umbrella in Italy. Its core business is the distribution and supply of LPG for domestic use, a market segment distinct from the automotive and industrial fuel retailing that dominated TotalErg's other operations. As a subsidiary of UGI Corporation, a US-based energy distribution group, UniverGas Italia operates within a larger international portfolio of LPG and energy businesses. The company is based in Italy and serves Italian customers, with its online presence at totalgaz.it reflecting the legacy TotalGaz brand identity. Because UniverGas Italia is a relatively recent corporate entity created through the 2018 divestment, detailed public information about its founding date, headquarters location, and executive leadership is limited. Its significance lies primarily in its role as the vehicle through which UGI Corporation entered or expanded its Italian domestic LPG operations following the breakup of TotalErg.

History

UniverGas Italia traces its origins to TotalGaz Italia, the entity within the Italian fuel group TotalErg that managed domestic LPG activities. TotalErg itself was formed on 1 October 2010 as a joint venture between Total and Erg, combining Total Italia and Erg Petroli, with Total holding 49% and Erg holding 51%. The TotalErg brand progressively replaced the Total and Erg signs at Italian service stations, and the group became one of Italy's leading fuel operators with around 2,600 retail outlets and a market share of roughly 11%. On 10 January 2018, Gruppo API completed the acquisition of the entirety of TotalErg, and the TotalErg brand was gradually replaced by the IP Gruppo API brand. As part of the transaction, the lubricants sector — including the Total, Elf and Erg brands and Fluidi Speciali — was transferred into a new Total Italia owned by Total. TotalGaz Italia, which handled domestic LPG activities, was instead sold to UGI Corporation and renamed UniverGas Italia. On 11 March 2019, TotalErg was merged by incorporation into Gruppo API. Following the rename, UniverGas Italia continued the domestic LPG business under UGI Corporation ownership, maintaining the totalgaz.it web presence. The company operates in the Italian domestic LPG market, a segment separate from the automotive fuel retailing that had defined TotalErg's main operations.
