Unity Runtime Fee controversy
Unity’s proposed installation-based Runtime Fee provoked strong opposition from developers concerned about unclear measurement, possible abuse, application to existing projects, and the financial effect on games with large installation counts. Unity revised the terms after the backlash, but the dispute contributed to reputational damage and preceded the departure of CEO John Riccitiello. Unity announced a proposed fee calculated partly from eligible game installations once projects met specified revenue and usage thresholds. Developers, publishers, and industry commentators criticized the plan over uncertainty about how installations would be counted, concerns about fraud and retroactive changes, and the potential financial impact on successful games with large install bases. Unity subsequently revised the proposal and canceled the runtime fee in September 2024.

Reference-only source-code license
Unity published portions of its C# source code under a reference-only license that permitted inspection but restricted reuse and modification. The licensing arrangement was notable because it provided visibility into implementation without making the code an open-source project.
