Overview

United Tractors is an Indonesian industrial group whose activities span heavy-equipment distribution, mining contracting, coal mining, gold mining, construction, and energy. The company operates as PT United Tractors Tbk and is a subsidiary of PT Astra International Tbk, one of Indonesia’s largest diversified business groups. Its roots are in the distribution of heavy machinery, but it has progressively developed an integrated business model covering equipment sales, component engineering, equipment rental, maintenance and remanufacturing, mine development and production, mineral processing, infrastructure construction, and power generation. The company was established in 1972 as PT Inter-Astra Motor Works and changed its name to PT United Tractors on October 13 of the same year. In 1973 it became the exclusive Indonesian distributor for Komatsu products, a relationship that formed the foundation of its construction-machinery business. It subsequently added Tadano cranes, Bomag vibratory rollers, UD Trucks, Scania vehicles, agricultural equipment, generators, forklifts, mini excavators, attachments, and parts. Supporting businesses provide engineering and manufacturing through PT United Tractors Pandu Engineering, component reconditioning through PT Komatsu Remanufacturing Asia and PT Universal Tekno Reksajaya, and equipment rental and used-machine sales through PT Multi Prima Universal. United Tractors entered mining contracting in 1989 by establishing PT Pamapersada Nusantara, commonly known as PAMA. PAMA provides mine design, feasibility assessment, infrastructure development, overburden removal, extraction, hauling, barging, transportation, reclamation, and related services. This created a major operating link between the group’s equipment-distribution capabilities and Indonesia’s large mining industry. The group later expanded from contracting into ownership of mining assets. Its coal-mining portfolio is managed primarily through PT Tuah Turangga Agung, or Turangga Resources, and includes thermal and metallurgical coal interests. In 2018, United Tractors acquired a controlling stake in PT Agincourt Resources, which operates the Martabe gold mine in North Sumatra. Gold mining became a formal business line in 2019. The group also entered construction through its investment in PT Acset Indonusa Tbk, which is active in building, civil, and marine engineering. Energy has become another strategic area. United Tractors holds interests in conventional power generation while developing renewable-energy activities through PT Energia Prima Nusantara and related entities. These activities include solar photovoltaic installations, mini-hydropower projects, studies for larger hydropower development, and potential floating-solar, wind, hybrid-battery, and waste-to-energy projects. The company also holds interests in the Tanjung Jati B power plant units 5 and 6 in Central Java. United Tractors’ operational footprint is supported by branches, site-support locations, representative offices, service facilities, and other customer-support points across Indonesia. Its positioning combines original-equipment distribution with lifecycle support and the ownership or operation of industrial assets. The company’s strategic direction increasingly emphasizes diversification beyond traditional coal and heavy equipment into gold, nickel, construction, and renewable energy, while retaining mining and infrastructure as core areas. It remains an active member of the Astra group and a significant participant in Indonesia’s industrial, extractive, and infrastructure economy.

History

United Tractors began operations in 1972 under the name PT Inter-Astra Motor Works, focusing on heavy-equipment distribution. The company adopted the United Tractors name on October 13, 1972. Its early growth was driven by equipment representation agreements, particularly the appointment as Komatsu’s exclusive distributor in Indonesia in 1973. It added Tadano, Bomag, UD Trucks, and other complementary equipment and transportation brands as demand expanded across mining, plantations, construction, forestry, and logistics. In 1983, the company created PT United Tractors Pandu Engineering to enter engineering and manufacturing for heavy-equipment components and attachments. The following year it became the exclusive distributor of UD Trucks, then known as Nissan Diesel. United Tractors also broadened its service capabilities through parts, component repair, equipment rental, used-machine sales, and remanufacturing activities. These investments helped it move beyond simple equipment sales toward a lifecycle-support model. A major strategic turning point came in 1989. United Tractors established PT Pamapersada Nusantara, or PAMA, to provide mining-contracting services. PAMA’s activities cover mine planning, feasibility work, infrastructure, land clearing and waste removal, extraction, hauling, barging, transportation, reclamation, and mine expansion. In the same year, United Tractors became a publicly listed company through listings on the Jakarta Stock Exchange and Surabaya Stock Exchange on September 19. During the 1990s and 2000s, the group developed additional industrial and resource capabilities. It established a quarry and limestone-mining joint venture with Semen Indonesia in 1992, created a Singapore-based equipment-import distribution company in 1995, and opened Komatsu component-remanufacturing operations in Balikpapan in 1997. In 2004, Scania products were added to the distribution portfolio. Beginning in 2007, PAMA and affiliated companies acquired interests in coal concessions and resource companies in Kalimantan. United Tractors also established businesses for machinery rental, used equipment, parts distribution, river coal transport, engine reconditioning, and ship repair and maintenance. The mining portfolio was progressively reorganized. In 2014, the coal-related subsidiaries were consolidated under Turangga Resources, with ownership held by United Tractors and PAMA. The group expanded into construction in 2015 by acquiring a controlling interest in PT Acset Indonusa Tbk. It also invested in gold exploration and established a power-generation company. In 2016 and 2017, it agreed to and completed the acquisition of an 80.1 percent interest in PT Suprabari Mapanindo Mineral, a metallurgical-coal concession in Central Kalimantan. Through PT Bhumi Jati Power, it also developed an independent power producer business and arranged financing for the Tanjung Jati B units 5 and 6 coal-fired power project in Central Java. United Tractors made its most significant move into gold mining in 2018, when its subsidiary PT Danusa Tambang Nusantara acquired 95 percent of PT Agincourt Resources. Agincourt operates the Martabe gold mine in North Sumatra, where construction began in 2008 and production started in 2012. Gold mining became the group’s sixth formal business line in 2019. The company continued to adjust its construction and energy holdings in 2020 and 2021. Capital-market transactions involving Acset changed United Tractors’ indirect ownership position, while the group sold its interest in PT Supra Alphaplus Handal. Renewable-energy subsidiaries formerly associated with PT Bina Pertiwi were transferred to PT Energia Prima Nusantara as part of an internal restructuring. In 2022, United Tractors expanded its renewable-energy portfolio by acquiring a 31.49 percent interest in PT Arkora Hydro Tbk. It also pursued diversification into nickel through agreements involving PT Stargate Pasific Resources and PT Stargate Mineral Asia. These steps reflected an effort to broaden the group’s resources and energy exposure while preparing for changes in the mining and power sectors. United Tractors therefore developed from a machinery distributor into a diversified Indonesian group with linked capabilities in equipment, mining services, resource ownership, construction, conventional power, and renewable energy.
