The company was founded in 1952 as a locksmith shop in Welgersdorf by Josef Unger sen. In 1986, the business was taken over by Josef Unger jun., relocated to Oberwart, and built into an internationally operating company. In 2007, steel fabrication II was put into operation in Sharjah (UAE). In 2008, Matthias Unger, third generation, joined the company. In 2012, production was expanded in Oberwart. In 2018, the office at the company headquarters in Oberwart was expanded and modernized. In 2021, steel fabrication III was acquired near Leipzig and Unger Stahlbau Brehna was newly founded.
