Overview

UnAufgefordert, commonly abbreviated as UnAuf, is a German student newspaper published at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU). Founded on 17 November 1989 during the political upheaval of the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was one of the first free newspapers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and is today one of the oldest student newspapers in Germany. The paper is published by the Freundeskreis der UnAufgefordert e.V., a registered association founded in 2009 by former and active editors to guarantee editorial independence. It is not affiliated with the university administration. The newspaper covers higher education policy, student life, and culture in Berlin and across Germany, with a particular focus on Humboldt-Universität. Its print edition appears bimonthly during the lecture period, with five issues per year (three in the winter semester, two in the summer semester). The online edition, UnAuf ONLINE, operates as a news blog with daily updates on campus news, politics, culture, and student life. The editorial team consists of about twenty volunteer editors who handle all aspects of production, from writing and editing to distribution and advertising. A three-person editor-in-chief is elected annually. UnAufgefordert has received several awards, including the MLP Campus-Presse Award for best German-language student newspaper in 2005 and 2008, and a special prize at the 13th Pro Campus-Presse Awards in 2017 for its investigative article "Solange keiner hinschaut," which exposed opaque practices in the HU student parliament. The paper has a free subscription option since 2007 and maintains an online archive of all issues since 1989. Its alumni include notable journalists such as Wolf-Christian Ulrich, Margarete Stokowski, and Ann-Kathrin Nezik.

History

UnAufgefordert was founded on 17 November 1989 under the name "Noch Namenlos" (Still Nameless) as the press organ of an independent student council that was intended to replace the FDJ (Free German Youth) as the representative body. To print in the GDR and obtain copy paper for the university's printers, the editorial team had to secure a state license. The first issue was therefore printed in West Berlin at TU Berlin and smuggled into East Berlin. The name "UnAufgefordert" was adopted before the second issue, inspired by signs at the Humboldt-Universität entrance that read: "Bitte die Ausweise der Humboldt-Universität unaufgefordert vorzeigen!" (Please show your Humboldt-Universität ID without being asked!). Only after the fourth issue did the paper receive an official printing permit: (36a) 5077 B from the Magistrat of Berlin, which granted access to a paper quota. The license still hangs in the editorial offices today. A year after the first issue, the first freely elected HU rector, Heinrich Fink, allocated a small room in the main building to the newspaper. Over the years, the paper operated as a student initiative funded by student fees. However, disputes over gender-equitable language, funding gaps, editorial appointments, and editorial independence led to a break with the student representation. In autumn 2008, on the 19th anniversary of the first issue, the Student Parliament decided to cut off funding. On 26 September 2009, the volunteer-run "Freundeskreis der UnAufgefordert e.V." was founded by former and active editors, and it has published the paper since then. The association adopted a statute guaranteeing editorial independence. Since 1989, 250 issues have been published, all available in an online archive. In autumn 2017, the editorial team scored a scoop with the article "Solange keiner hinschaut" (As long as no one is watching), which uncovered opaque practices in the HU student parliament and sparked a nationwide debate. The article was reprinted in Der Tagesspiegel and covered by media across Germany. The paper has been available by free subscription since 2007. In May 2019, the online edition was redesigned and renamed UnAuf ONLINE. The editorial team has undertaken projects and trips to Hungary, France, Israel, and Turkey, and organizes conferences, workshops, and panel discussions once or twice a year, often in cooperation with partners. It also regularly visits editorial offices and media houses in and around Berlin.
