Overview

Una Città (full title: Una città - mensile di interviste) is an Italian political and cultural monthly magazine founded in 1991 in Forlì. It is published by a cooperative of former left-wing militants, four of whom were previously active in Lotta Continua. The magazine is entirely self-financed, carries no advertising by editorial choice, and is distributed exclusively by subscription, with around 1,500 copies circulated evenly across Italy. It publishes ten issues per year. From its first issue, the content of Una Città has consisted exclusively of interviews. These are typically long and wide-ranging, covering domestic and foreign politics, culture, economy, customs, and society. The texts are accompanied by large-format black-and-white photographs. Interviewees range from cultural and political figures, experts, and social workers to ordinary citizens, reflecting the magazine's interest in everyday life and the complexity of social problems. The magazine also commemorates significant but forgotten figures from the past and organizes events on specific issues. The magazine's declared political line is "libertarian, cooperativist, and internationalist." In its statement of beliefs, the editorial team emphasizes the "militancy of the question and the interview," the practice of listening and storytelling, and the value of pluralism. It professes faith in the enduring relevance of the great ideals of "humanitarian socialism": democracy and freedom, social justice, cooperation and mutuality, communalism and federalism, Europeanism and cosmopolitanism. It aims to engage in a battle of ideas so that the left, drawing on its oldest tradition, may rediscover its "social reason" in trust in people, their freedom and capacity for autonomy, and their vital need to associate and cooperate. As a supplement to Una Città, the magazine has published the book series I Quaderni dell'altra tradizione, the first volume of which was dedicated to Nicola Chiaromonte. The magazine also publishes books under the imprint Ed. Una Città, including works by Chiara Frugoni, Giovanni Tassani, and others. Over its history, Una Città has conducted more than a thousand interviews. Notable interviewees include Vittorio Foa, Goffredo Fofi, Eric Foner, Luciano Gallino, Nadia Urbinati, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, Michel Wieviorka, and many others. The magazine has been praised by figures such as Gianni Sofri, who in 1997 described it as having "meritoriously established itself nationally," and Marino Sinibaldi, who called it "a beautiful magazine from Forlì." In 2010, L'Espresso dedicated an article to the magazine titled "Utopia in redazione," noting that "Una città makes great philosophers speak, but also caregivers."

History

Una Città was founded in 1991 in Forlì by a cooperative of former left-wing militants, four of whom had been members of Lotta Continua. The magazine was established as a monthly publication consisting entirely of interviews, with a declared political line described as "libertarian, cooperativist, and internationalist." It adopted a broadsheet format (56 cm), which allowed for flexible layout and the use of large-format photographic images. From the outset, the magazine was entirely self-financed and carried no advertising by editorial choice. It publishes ten issues per year and is distributed exclusively by subscription, with around 1,500 copies circulated evenly throughout Italy. The content of the magazine has been exclusively interviews since its first issue. These interviews are typically long and detailed, covering a wide range of social themes: domestic and foreign politics, culture, economy, customs, and society. The texts are integrated with large-format black-and-white photographs. Interviewees include cultural and political personalities, experts, social workers, and ordinary citizens, addressing both everyday life and the complexity of social problems. The magazine also features remembrances of significant but forgotten figures from the past and organizes events on specific issues. As a supplement to Una Città, the magazine has published the book series I Quaderni dell'altra tradizione, the first volume of which was dedicated to Nicola Chiaromonte. The magazine also publishes books under the imprint Ed. Una Città, including works such as "Cosa intendi dire? Intervista a Chiara Frugoni, 1994-2015" (2023), "Su tempi appena trascorsi" by Giovanni Tassani (2023), and "L'epopea degli scarriolanti" (2022). Some volumes are published in cooperation with other publishers, such as edit91 soc. coop. Over its history, Una Città has conducted more than a thousand interviews. Notable interviewees include Georges Bensoussan, David Bidussa, Marco Boato, Pier Cesare Bori, Marco Berlinguer, Luigi Bobbio, Stephen Bronner, Vittorio Foa, Goffredo Fofi, Eric Foner, Luciano Gallino, Natale Graziani, Jeff Halper, Giovanni Jervis, Farhad Khosrokhavar, Gary LaFree, Giuseppe Laterza, Jean-Christophe Le Duigou, Luigi Manconi, Valerio Pocar, Farian Sabahi, Don Alessandro Santoro, Franco Toscani, Nadia Urbinati, Dominique Vidal, Pierre Vidal-Naquet, and Michel Wieviorka, among others. The magazine has received recognition from various quarters. In 2010, L'Espresso (issue 25) published an article by Gigi Riva titled "Utopia in redazione," which stated that "Una città fa parlare i grandi filosofi ma anche le badanti." In the same year, La Repubblica published an article by Michele Smargiassi, "L'arte della intervista," on the occasion of the magazine's twentieth anniversary. The magazine is also listed in the Guida all'Italia delle riviste di cultura (2005).
