History
Ultramagic's history began in 1978 when the founders started flying balloons with a used balloon. They then designed and built their own much bigger balloon for an expedition to Africa; the 1980 trip lasted 11 months, involved 40 flights, and went from Zanzibar (Tanzania) to Kisiangani (Zaire). The participants in this adventure were Josep M Lladó, Jaume Llansana and Joan Comellas. After the trip they started designing and building an Ultralight aircraft and created Ultramagic S.A. During the Ultralight period, news spread about their balloon building for the Africa adventure and more people asked if they could build one for them. Having balloon-building experience, sewing machines and the aeronautical organisation, for strategic reasons Ultramagic Ultralights became Ultramagic Balloons. The company has since built thousands of balloons that fly and operate worldwide, with annual production increasing to between 80 and 100 balloons, approximately 80% for export to every part of the world including Japan, North America, South America, Europe and Africa. Ultramagic Balloons are described as firmly established as the leader in balloon design and one of the largest balloon manufacturers in the world. In 1993 the company started a division for cold air inflatables, which quickly became successful with over 4000 built to date and annual production now averaging over 250 units. The business has grown to have over 50 qualified and dedicated staff working at a purpose-built factory.
