Overview
Ulrich GmbH & Co. KG, which has traded under the brand name ulrich medical since 2005, is a German medical technology company headquartered in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1912 by Heinrich C. Ulrich, it began by manufacturing and selling surgical instruments for visceral, bone and vascular surgery, with an affiliated orthopedic and surgical workshop. Over more than 110 years it has developed, manufactured and sold innovative medical devices in Germany, positioning itself around a "Made in Germany" quality promise. The company's modern portfolio focuses on two clinical fields: radiology and spinal surgery. In radiology, ulrich medical supplies contrast medium injectors for computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and mammography, together with associated consumables, and the Contrast Booster respiratory control device used to improve the quality of pulmonary CT scans. The company states it was the world's first to develop a contrast injector with tandem technology, allowing electronic control and use of two different contrast media for greater efficiency and comfort. In spinal surgery, it offers rod-screw systems, cages, vertebral body replacement and plates for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including dynamic systems that stabilize the spine while preserving some physiological mobility. ulrich medical is a family-owned business and describes lasting, long-term partnerships as central to its identity. It sells directly in its home market of Germany and through subsidiaries in major markets: ulrich medical USA Inc. was established in 2006 (originally in Chesterfield, Missouri, and based in Dallas, Texas since 2023), ulrich medical France in Toulouse since October 2017, and ulrich medical España in Madrid since October 2024. In more than 50 export countries, exclusive specialist distributors provide support to surgeons, radiologists, medical technicians, surgical staff and hospital representatives. The company reported revenue of EUR 178 million in 2025, describing growth of about 10 percent and continued outperformance of the industry average. It continues to launch new products, such as the Artus cervical plate system introduced in June 2026, and remains active in medical education, for example at the "World Spine 11" event in Homburg/Saar in September 2026.
History
Ulrich GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1912 by Heinrich C. Ulrich in Ulm, Germany, as a medical technology company. Its initial focus was the manufacture and sale of surgical instruments, for example for visceral, bone and vascular surgery, and an orthopedic and surgical workshop was affiliated with the company. In 1914 the company launched its first in-house development, the Möltgen protractor, a medical device used to determine the joint angles of the extremities. In 1925 Max Ulrich, the son of the founder, joined the family business. He expanded the company in the following years, laying the foundation for the successful worldwide sales of its medical devices. The company became known in the mid-20th century particularly for its role as an innovation leader in German medical technology history. In 1934, following an idea by the surgeon Neuffer, the instrument maker Ulrich built a gastrointestinal suturing apparatus with interchangeable clamp inserts, described as the "Ulrich'sche Apparat" with one or two reserve chambers. In 1952 the first artificial finger joint was built at Ulrich, and in 1958 the first German heart-lung machine. In 1958 the company also began its involvement in radiology with the launch of the first Hettler high-pressure injector, which had a pneumatic drive unit and was suitable for all angiographic examinations. Internationalization continued successfully from 1967. Since 1978 the company has produced spinal implants and instruments. In 1985 it sold its first CT/MRI contrast medium injector. In 2000 the company closed its business areas for medical supply stores (Sanitätshaus), rehabilitation technology, and physician and consultation supplies, concentrating instead on the distribution of its own manufactured medical technology. Since 2005 the company has used the trade brand "ulrich medical". In January 2006 the subsidiary ulrich medical USA Inc. was founded in Chesterfield, Missouri; it has been headquartered in Dallas, Texas since 2023. In October 2017 the French sales subsidiary ulrich medical France was established in Toulouse. In October 2024 the Spanish subsidiary ulrich medical España was founded in Madrid. As of 2025 the product portfolio covers spinal surgery and radiology, with most products developed and produced in Germany. The company reported revenue of EUR 178 million in 2025, about 10 percent growth, and continues to launch new products such as the Artus cervical plate system in June 2026.
