Overview
Ulead Systems was a Taiwanese computer-software company that developed consumer and professional tools for digital imaging, video editing, disc authoring, animation, web publishing, and digital media management. Founded in Taipei in 1989 by Lotus Chen, Lewis Liaw, and Way-Zen Chen, the company grew out of work undertaken after the founders left Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry. With support from Microtek, they pursued the development and commercialization of PhotoStyler, an early true-color image-editing application for Microsoft Windows. Ulead initially distributed PhotoStyler through Aldus Corporation. After Aldus became part of Adobe Systems in 1994, Ulead continued independently and developed PhotoImpact as its principal image-editing product. PhotoImpact became one of the company's most recognizable graphics applications, competing in the broader consumer and prosumer image-editing market. Ulead subsequently expanded beyond still-image software into video production, media organization, web utilities, DVD and Blu-ray authoring, 3D titles and effects, panorama stitching, and software designed for emerging digital-home and handheld-media use cases. The company's portfolio included VideoStudio, a consumer-oriented video-editing product; MediaStudio Pro, a more advanced editing and effects package; COOL 3D and COOL 3D Production Studio for animated titles and motion graphics; DVD MovieFactory and DVD WorkShop for disc authoring; and a range of image, web, and media-management utilities. This breadth positioned Ulead as a specialist multimedia software house serving home users, enthusiasts, small creative businesses, and selected professional workflows. Ulead became a publicly traded company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in September 2001 under ticker 2487.TW. Its corporate independence ended through a sequence of acquisitions. InterVideo acquired Ulead in April 2005 for approximately US$68 million. InterVideo later announced a merger with Ulead, completed in December 2006. During the same period, Corel announced its agreement to acquire InterVideo for approximately US$196 million and completed that transaction in December 2006. Ulead was removed from the Taiwan Stock Exchange in October 2006. After the Corel transaction, Ulead's products and development operations were absorbed into Corel's broader creativity-software organization. Most Ulead-branded applications were gradually discontinued or folded into successor products. VideoStudio was the principal Ulead-originated line to remain commercially visible, although it was increasingly marketed as Corel VideoStudio rather than as an independent Ulead company offering. Ulead therefore survives primarily as a software heritage and product lineage within Corel, rather than as an active standalone corporation.
History
Ulead Systems was established in Taiwan on August 5, 1989, by Lotus Chen, Lewis Liaw, and Way-Zen Chen. The founders had previously worked at Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry and received support from Microtek to develop and commercialize PhotoStyler, a true-color image-editing program for Windows. This early focus placed Ulead within the emerging market for computer-based graphics at a time when color personal computing and desktop publishing were expanding rapidly. Ulead sold PhotoStyler through Aldus Corporation. When Aldus merged with Adobe Systems in 1994, PhotoStyler was no longer available as an ongoing Ulead product. Ulead responded by strengthening its independent product development and introducing PhotoImpact 3 as a major image-editing application. PhotoImpact became the company's central graphics brand and helped establish Ulead as a recognizable developer of Windows multimedia software. The company later broadened its scope substantially. Its development activities covered video editing, media management, web utilities, DVD authoring, digital-home applications, and related creative tools. VideoStudio became its best-known consumer video editor, while MediaStudio Pro addressed more advanced editing and effects workflows. Other products included DVD MovieFactory, DVD WorkShop, COOL 3D, COOL 3D Production Studio, Photo Explorer, GIF Animator, and a variety of utilities for image organization, panorama creation, disc burning, and handheld media. Ulead's expansion reflected the convergence of personal computers, digital cameras, camcorders, writable optical media, and home entertainment systems. Rather than operating only as an image-editing specialist, the company assembled a broad suite of applications intended to help users capture, edit, organize, publish, and distribute digital content. Its portfolio served consumers and enthusiasts while also offering more specialized tools for professional or semi-professional video and authoring work. On September 17, 2001, Ulead was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange as 2487.TW. The company subsequently entered a period of corporate consolidation. InterVideo acquired Ulead on April 13, 2005, in a transaction reported at approximately US$68 million. On July 9, 2006, InterVideo announced that its merger with Ulead would be completed on December 28 of that year. Corel announced on August 28, 2006, that it would acquire InterVideo for approximately US$196 million. Ulead was delisted from the Taiwan Stock Exchange on October 24, 2006, and Corel announced completion of the InterVideo and Ulead acquisition on December 12, 2006. Following the acquisition, Ulead's products and development teams were integrated into Corel's creativity-software activities. Most of the former Ulead portfolio was phased out or discontinued over time. VideoStudio was the principal product line to continue in the market, evolving under Corel's ownership. The Ulead corporate entity and independent brand consequently declined in visibility, but its technology, products, and product heritage remained influential within Corel's consumer multimedia software portfolio.

VideoStudioConsumer video editing
VideoStudio was Ulead's best-known consumer video-editing application. It was designed for importing, arranging, editing, enhancing, and exporting video, serving home users and enthusiasts as digital camcorders and consumer video production became widespread. The product remained part of Ulead's historical graphics portfolio but was discontinued after version X3 following the company's integration into Corel.

It reflected Ulead's early and continuing interest in tools for online publishing, alongside products such as GIF-X.Plug-in, Menu.Applet, and SmartSaver Pro.
