Overview
Ukrmedknyha (Ukrainian Medical Book) is the publishing and printing complex of the I. Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University in Ternopil, Ukraine. It was established in 1997 on the initiative of the university's rector, L. Ya. Kovalchuk, with the aim of producing and distributing printed materials. At the time of its founding it was the first publishing house in Ukraine to supply students and teachers of the country's medical educational institutions with Ukrainian-language teaching and methodological literature, including textbooks, manuals, atlases, dictionaries, monographs and methodological materials. Today the main activities of Ukrmedknyha are the production and sale of its own printed output — textbooks, manuals, monographs, books, scholarly periodicals, newspapers and brochures — and the provision of editorial and printing services to other publishers, organizations, enterprises and private individuals. The publishing house comprises an editorial and publishing department, an advertising and sales department, and a printing department with subdivisions for offset printing, bookbinding, printing-form preparation and paper preparation. Small-circulation products are printed in a mini-printing house, while the journal editorial office receives and prepares articles for the relevant periodicals. The advertising and sales department handles the distribution of publishing output. It cooperates with Ukrainian higher medical educational institutions of III–IV accreditation levels, educational institutions of I–III accreditation levels, book-trade organizations and private distributors, and takes part in exhibitions, book fairs, forums, scholarly conferences and congresses. The printing department provides the full range of polygraphic services. Ukrmedknyha operates as a structural unit of Ternopil National Medical University, a state higher education institution. Its catalogue is oriented toward the medical and pharmaceutical curriculum and research needs of Ukrainian medical universities, and its editorial and printing capacity also serves external clients. The publisher maintains a Google Sites web presence with information for authors, publishing contracts, review templates and other documents.
History
Ukrmedknyha was created in 1997 on the initiative of L. Ya. Kovalchuk, then rector of the Ternopil medical institution, for the purpose of producing and distributing printed materials. At that time it was the first publishing house in Ukraine to provide students and teachers of the state's medical educational institutions with Ukrainian-language teaching and methodological literature — textbooks, manuals, atlases, dictionaries, monographs and methodological materials. The publisher was established within the framework of the Ternopil medical institution, which had been founded in 1957 and was renamed in honour of Ivan Ya. Horbachevsky in 1992. In 1997 the institution was granted the status of medical academy by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, and in 2004 it was reorganized into the I. Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University. Ukrmedknyha grew as the university's own publishing and printing complex, and the university's own historical account notes that the publishing house was created with its own polygraphic complex. Over the years the publisher developed a structure that includes an editorial and publishing department, an advertising and sales department, and a printing department with subdivisions for offset printing, bookbinding, printing-form preparation and paper preparation. Small-circulation products are printed in a mini-printing house, and a journal editorial office receives and prepares articles for the relevant periodicals. The advertising and sales department distributes the publishing output, cooperating with Ukrainian higher medical educational institutions of III–IV accreditation levels, educational institutions of I–III accreditation levels, book-trade organizations and private distributors, and participating in exhibitions, book fairs, forums, scholarly conferences and congresses. The printing department provides editorial and polygraphic services to other publishers, organizations, enterprises and private individuals. As of the 2020s Ukrmedknyha continues to operate as the publishing and printing complex of Ternopil National Medical University, issuing its own textbooks, manuals, monographs, books, scholarly journals, newspapers and brochures, and offering editorial and printing services. Its web presence provides information for authors, publishing contracts, review templates and other documents.
