Overview

Uiltje Brewing Company (officially Brouwerij Uiltje, originally Het Uiltje) is a Dutch craft brewery founded in 2012 and based in Haarlem, Netherlands. It began as a contract brewery before opening its own brewing facility in the Waarderpolder industrial area of Haarlem in 2016, partly funded by crowdfunding. The brewery is known for its heavily hopped, hop-forward beers and for its distinctive labels illustrated by Gerben Valkema, which have given the brand recognition beyond the beer world. Its motto is to brew "f*cking goed bier" (f*cking good beer) and to offer "a moment of escape in a crazy and stressful world." The brewery produces a range of styles including IPAs, imperial IPAs, pale ales, stouts, and non-alcoholic options, with flagship beers such as Bird of Prey IPA, Dr. Raptor Imperial IPA, and Superb-Owl Non-Alcoholic IPA. In April 2021, Uiltje was acquired by Royal Swinkels, the family-owned group behind Brouwerij Bavaria, at which time it employed 27 people. The brewery has won national and international awards and has appeared twice in RateBeer's Top 100 Best Brewers in the World. It sells through its own webshop and through retail and hospitality channels, with a focus on fresh, hoppy beers and regular special releases.

History

Uiltje Brewing Company was founded in 2012 as Het Uiltje, starting as a contract brewery in Haarlem, Netherlands. For its early years it brewed at other facilities while building its brand around heavily hopped, hop-forward beers and a distinctive visual identity featuring owl illustrations by Gerben Valkema. In 2016, partly thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, the brewery opened its own brewing installation in the Waarderpolder industrial area of Haarlem, allowing it to brew its own beer on site. By 2020, the brewery produced 10,000 hectoliters of beer annually. In April 2021, it was announced that Uiltje had been acquired by Royal Swinkels, the family-owned group that also owns Brouwerij Bavaria, among others. At the time of the acquisition, the brewery employed 27 people. The brewery has won national and international awards and has appeared twice in RateBeer's Top 100 Best Brewers in the World. It continues to operate as a craft brewery under the Royal Swinkels umbrella, selling through its own webshop and other channels, with a focus on fresh, hoppy beers and regular special releases.
