Overview

UEKI Corporation (株式会社ウエキコーポレーション) is a Japanese specialist trading house, or "gas senmon shosha," focused on industrial and specialty gases and related technologies. It was founded on 1 June 1936 in Higashi-Rokugo, Ota-ku, Tokyo, by Takeji Ueki as a sole proprietorship selling high-pressure gases such as oxygen and hydrogen. After a wartime interruption, the business was re-established in 1946 as Jusho-kai, incorporated in 1950 as Ueki Shoten Co., Ltd., and renamed Ueki Gas Science Co., Ltd. in 1969 before adopting its current name, Ueki Corporation, in 1989. The company marked its 90th anniversary in 2026. The company describes itself as a "gas expert company" and organizes its activities around six gas-related business fields: gas-related business, semiconductor materials and chemicals, parts and materials, equipment technology, gas services, and analysis and evaluation. Its product and service range spans general industrial gases, fuel gases, semiconductor material gases, calibration standard gases, rare gases and food-grade gases, alongside semiconductor sputtering targets, high-corrosion-resistant ceramic coatings for semiconductor and FPD manufacturing equipment, CMP pad conditioner products, fluorinated inert liquids used as refrigerants, cleaning agents and solvents, sanitary management products, fine ceramics, cryogenic magnetic regenerator materials, glass beads, surface treatment, and specialized equipment. It also provides gas services, analysis case studies, troubleshooting and equipment lists. Beyond gases, the company operates two further business domains: a chemicals business covering industrial chemicals and various solvents, and a parts and materials business handling metal parts, fine ceramics and electronic components. It has also pursued lower-environmental-impact businesses such as natural gas, and states that it was among the first in its industry to obtain ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification. Its stated corporate values emphasize courtesy and gratitude toward customers, careful yet bold action, and sensitivity to environmental change. UEKI Corporation is headquartered at 5-33-10 Kugahara, Ota-ku, Tokyo, with capital of 60 million yen and a fiscal year ending 30 September. Its representative director, president and CEO is Ihiko Kimoto. The company reported annual sales of 23.8 billion yen and 361 employees as of September 2025. It maintains a network of branches and offices across Japan, including in Sagamihara, Osaka, Oita, Utsunomiya, Sendai, Kitakyushu, Yokohama, Kumagaya, Himeji, Hamamatsu, Nagoya and other locations, and it participates in industry exhibitions such as the Kyushu Semiconductor Industry Exhibition and the International Welding Show.

History

UEKI Corporation traces its origins to 1 June 1936, when Takeji Ueki began a sole proprietorship in Higashi-Rokugo, Ota-ku, Tokyo, selling high-pressure gases such as oxygen and hydrogen. This business was interrupted around the end of World War II. In May 1946 it was re-established as Jusho-kai (寿商会). In June 1950 the business was reorganized into a stock company, Ueki Shoten Co., Ltd. (株式会社植木商店), with capital of 500,000 yen, and became a designated dealer for Toshiba, obtaining sole sales rights for the oxygen, nitrogen, argon and neon gases Toshiba produced; it also became an agent for Nippon Sanso, Showa Denko, Toyo Sanso and others. Expansion followed through the 1960s and 1970s. A branch was opened in Sagamihara in March 1964, extending the company's reach across Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture. In June 1969, to raise the dimension of its activities and approach science more directly, the company changed its name to Ueki Gas Science Co., Ltd. (ウエキガス科学株式会社). An Osaka sales office was opened in July 1969, an Oita office in February 1970, a North Kanto branch in Utsunomiya in April 1972, and a Sendai office in October 1975. The current head office building was constructed in May 1974. In December 1976 the North Kanto branch was newly built and relocated in Kanuma. In October 1979 a comprehensive gas center was opened within Toshiba's Oita plant, and the Oita office was relocated there. Further network growth continued in the 1980s. A Kitakyushu office was opened in October 1981 and relocated to Toshiba's Kitakyushu plant in August 1983. A Yokohama office opened in October 1984. In July 1985 a nitrogen production facility was installed within the Oita gas center, beginning nitrogen production for Toshiba's Oita plant. In October 1985 a Saitama office in Kumagaya, a Horikawacho office in Kawasaki and a Himeji office were opened. An Izumi office in Sendai followed in October 1987, and a Hamamatsu office in January 1989. In October 1989, responding to diversifying needs, the company adopted its present name, Ueki Corporation (株式会社ウエキコーポレーション). In the 1990s the company continued to reorganize and expand its sites: the Saitama office moved to Fukaya in December 1990; a Yokohama Gas Center was opened in July 1991; the Himeji office was newly built and relocated in Tatsuno in July 1992; a North Japan branch was opened in Sendai in October 1992; and a Nagoya office was opened in November 1993. Over the following decades the company developed its six gas-related business fields and its Gas Total Solution offering, spanning gas manufacturing, supply and analysis through equipment design, construction and maintenance, and built particular strength in semiconductor, LCD and plasma gases and specialty material gases. It also expanded into industrial chemicals and solvents, and into metal parts, fine ceramics and electronic components, and pursued lower-impact businesses such as natural gas while obtaining ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification early in its industry. The company celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2026.
