Overview

Udruga Filmaktiv is a Croatian non-profit organization founded in 2001 and formally registered in 2004, based in Rijeka. It brings together creative individuals working to develop independent culture and encourage social change through the production and promotion of audiovisual art, non-formal education and inclusive programmes. The association is strongly oriented toward socially engaged film and new-media practice, and since 2001 it has run numerous workshops in Rijeka and across Croatia, primarily for young people. Its documentary film workshops have trained dozens of participants who went on to work in film or continue their studies at film schools abroad. Filmaktiv also organizes workshops exploring research-based and interdisciplinary approaches to moving images — including interactive art, video mapping in public space, video in performing arts, glitch art and open-source workshops — as well as video-activism workshops for children and youth on the Adriatic islands. In production, Filmaktiv makes documentary, animated and experimental films by its members and external collaborators, contributing to the development of independent film and audiovisual production in Rijeka. Its socially engaged documentaries address different aspects of society, aiming to expose topics underrepresented in popular media and to achieve social change. Notable titles include "Nevidljivi grad" (Invisible City), a genre-creative documentary hybrid of documentary and fiction forms; "Delta – Obilje umjetnosti" (Delta – Abundance of Art), a documentary that won the ArTVision selection at the 72nd Venice Biennale; and "Plenumovi" (Plenums), screened at the 24th Days of Croatian Film and at numerous panel discussions and round tables across Croatia. Filmaktiv collaborates with related associations, institutions, individuals and the public and private sectors in Rijeka and Croatia. Since 2006 it has been a member of the Klubtura association alliance, through which it carries out activities in partnership with other like-minded organizations, and it is one of the founders of the Molekula association alliance. In recent years, notable collaborations include work with SOS Rijeka – Centre for Nonviolence and Human Rights on the "Ambasadori nenasilja" (Ambassadors of Nonviolence) project, and with Udruga Delta on the "Ulična oaza" (Street Oasis) project. Udruga Delta was also a partner on the "Otoci 2023" (Islands 2023) project, an enriched version of an educational project Filmaktiv has run since its earliest days. The president of Filmaktiv is Ana Jurčić, and the members of the Management Board include Borko Novitović and others. The organization continues to organize workshops, film screenings, festivals and residency programmes, creating space for creative expression and cultural dialogue.
