Overview

Udruženje za razvoj kulture "URK" (the Association for Cultural Development "URK") is a Croatian non-governmental cultural association founded in Zagreb in 1995. It is best known as the founding and operating organization behind Klub Močvara, one of Zagreb's most enduring independent music and arts venues. The association's mission is to develop and promote contemporary, alternative and independent culture, and it realizes that mission primarily through the programming of its club. Klub Močvara was opened by the association on 16 April 1999 in Runjaninova ulica 3 in Zagreb, in a converted former soft-drink discount store. After several months at that address, the club moved to its present location in the former Jedinstvo factory in the Trnje district, on the bank of the Sava river, where it has operated since 2000. The venue's programme spans concerts, music listening sessions, exhibitions, theatre performances, film and literary programmes, and workshops, making it a multidisciplinary cultural hub rather than a purely music-oriented club. Over the decades Močvara has hosted a wide range of Croatian and international performers, from underground and alternative acts to established touring artists. The club's visual identity is closely associated with the posters and programme booklets of comic-book author Igor Hofbauer, whose work has become one of the most recognizable elements of Močvara's artistic character. The association also ran a short-lived record label, Zvuk Močvare, in 2002 and 2003. As a non-profit citizens' association, URK is not a commercial company and is not listed on any stock exchange. It operates as part of Zagreb's independent cultural scene, sharing the former Jedinstvo factory complex with other cultural actors such as Pogon – Zagreb Centre for Independent Culture and Youth. Its long-running club remains the association's flagship project and its principal public face.

History

Udruženje za razvoj kulture "URK" was founded in Zagreb in 1995 as a citizens' association dedicated to the development of culture. Before it had a permanent club of its own, the association organized its programmes in various borrowed or temporary city spaces, including KSET, Rupa (a club at the Faculty of Philosophy), and open-air locations such as the festival grounds at Ponikve. A particularly important early event is cited as URK's first club concert, held at KSET on 29 November 1996, featuring Šumski, Mance and the Polish band Ewa Braun; the poster was designed by comic-book author Igor Hofbauer, whose posters and programme booklets would become the most visually recognizable part of Močvara's artistic identity. On 16 April 1999 the association opened Klub Močvara, having converted an old, neglected soft-drink discount store at Runjaninova ulica 3 in Zagreb. The club operated at that location for several months before moving to its current home. Since 2000 it has been based in the former Jedinstvo factory in the Trnje neighbourhood, on the bank of the Sava river. The building itself has its own history. In 1966 the Institute for Process Technology was opened on the site as a branch of the Omladinska tvornica Jedinstvo (Jedinstvo Youth Factory). After the break-up of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, declining orders and other worsening business conditions — customs restrictions, difficulties collecting payment for delivered goods, and separation from the Čakovec-based Metalac in the mid-1990s — made Jedinstvo's operations increasingly difficult. The conversion into a joint-stock company in 1992 and privatization from 1998 to 2000 were accompanied by a reduced scope of business and a drastic reduction in the number of employees. In the late 1990s the space, then under the management of the Zagreb City Office for Culture, was initially opened to city theatres for storing stage sets and other materials. In 1998 the theatre group Kufer became the first long-term user, with the idea of opening a theatre in the large hall intended for young authors and their projects. Pogon – Zagreb Centre for Independent Culture and Youth also operates in the space; it is a cultural institution jointly founded and managed by Operacija grad and the City of Zagreb at the end of 2008. Močvara's programme has grown into a broad multidisciplinary offering: concerts, music listening sessions, exhibitions, theatre performances, film and literary programmes, and workshops. The club has hosted numerous well-known musical acts, including Sick of It All and Dillinger Escape Plan, alongside many Croatian and regional artists. In 2002 and 2003 the association also ran a record label, Zvuk Močvare, which was short-lived. The venue's bar, Močvarni birc, operates daily from 17:00 to midnight independently of the club's programme, and the club also hosts recurring events such as the Močvarni dnevni boravak quiz nights. The former Jedinstvo factory space also hosts the theatre artist Damir Bartol Indoš, and near the club is the Alley of Sculptures on the Sava embankment, initiated by academic sculptor Ratko Petrić.
