Overview

UCloud (优刻得, formally UCloud Technology Co., Ltd. / 优刻得科技股份有限公司) is a Chinese cloud computing company headquartered in Shanghai. It was founded in 2012 by Ji Xinhua and co-founders with a positioning as a 'neutral' public cloud provider — one that does not compete with its customers in their own businesses, in contrast to the large internet-platform clouds. The company builds and operates data centers and sells on-demand computing, storage, networking and database capacity, together with platform services and industry-specific cloud solutions, to internet companies, traditional enterprises, government bodies and developers across China. UCloud's core commercial offering is public cloud infrastructure-as-a-service: elastic compute (cloud servers), object and block storage, content delivery, load balancing, managed databases, big-data and container services, plus security and hybrid-cloud products. Around this core it has developed private and hybrid cloud deployments, industry cloud offerings for sectors such as education, retail, finance, healthcare and government, and support for enterprise digital transformation. Its brand promise centers on reliability, cost-performance and vendor neutrality rather than on a consumer-facing ecosystem. UCloud became one of China's better-known independent cloud vendors and in 2020 listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market (科创板) under the ticker 688158, a landmark for a domestic independent cloud company. It competes in a market dominated by Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, Huawei Cloud and state telecom clouds, and has positioned itself around neutrality, customization and service for mid-sized and vertical customers. The company continues to operate as an active public cloud and industry-cloud provider, expanding into AI computing and hybrid-cloud scenarios.

History

UCloud was founded in 2012 in Shanghai by Ji Xinhua and co-founders as an independent public cloud provider. From the outset it differentiated itself as a 'neutral' cloud — a vendor that would not launch consumer internet services competing with its own customers, a stance aimed at internet companies and enterprises wary of relying on the cloud arms of large platform companies. Through the 2010s the company built out a nationwide data-center footprint and a full IaaS stack: elastic compute, storage, networking, CDN, databases and platform services. It expanded from serving startups and internet companies into traditional industries, government and education, adding private cloud, hybrid cloud and industry-cloud offerings as Chinese enterprises accelerated digital transformation. A major milestone came in 2020, when UCloud listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market (科创板) under ticker 688158, becoming one of the first independent Chinese cloud companies to go public. The listing raised its profile and provided capital for data-center and product expansion. In the years since, UCloud has operated in a highly competitive market dominated by Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, Huawei Cloud and the state telecom operators' cloud units. It has continued to emphasize neutrality, customization and service for mid-market and vertical customers, and has moved into AI computing and hybrid-cloud scenarios as demand for GPU capacity and enterprise cloud grew. The company remains an active public cloud and industry-cloud provider headquartered in Shanghai.
