Overview

UCI Aeroclube was a multiplex cinema located in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. It opened on 24 June 1999, three months before the official inauguration of the Aeroclube Plaza Show shopping centre where it was situated, on Avenida Otávio Mangabeira in the Boca do Rio neighbourhood. The complex was part of the UCI Cinemas chain, a major Brazilian cinema exhibitor. It had ten auditoriums with a total of 2,738 seats, averaging 278 seats per room. Its largest auditorium, Sala 01, was also the largest in the North, Northeast and Central-West regions of Brazil, with 553 seats and a 150-square-metre screen; it was the largest UCI auditorium in the country and one of the largest in the Brazilian exhibition market. During its first five years, UCI Aeroclube ranked among the top cinema complexes in Brazil by both attendance and revenue. As the shopping centre declined and new complexes opened in Salvador, its audience fell, but promotions and reduced ticket prices—making it the cheapest complex in Salvador—helped retain a loyal public that exceeded 460,000 in 2010. Its single-day attendance peak occurred on Monday 20 April 2009, when 6,799 people filled its auditoriums thanks to the Segunda Mania promotion, which lowered ticket prices to four reais for a full ticket and two reais for a half ticket; that day it was the fifth-largest cinema in Brazil. From November 2010 it gained a digital 3D auditorium with 4K resolution. In April 2011 film schedules began to be displayed on LCD monitors and 3D tickets were sold with numbered seats. The cinema closed on 30 April 2014, the date of its last screenings, due to the demolition of the shopping centre, with a promise of reopening after the new Aeroclube was inaugurated. The UCI Aeroclube brand is now defunct, but it remains part of the history of UCI Cinemas in Brazil.
