Overview

U Rozvařilů is a Prague restaurant and canteen (jídelna) whose name has been associated with the site since the Middle Ages. The name "U Rozvařilů" was borne by a brewery from the 15th century. Before World War I, a hall for 400 spectators was created here and became famous for performances by popular cabarets; the actor Eduard Vojan, for example, began his career here. In 1936 the neighboring Legiobanka purchased the building and had it demolished, constructing a modern palace on the site. The First Republic-era restaurant was established in the then-new building at the corner of a passage at Na Poříčí 26. The same passage also housed the E. F. Buriana Theatre (from the turn of the 21st century, Divadlo Archa). In the 1920s the restaurant, which maintained the tradition of a roadhouse, also operated a cabaret and variety show. At the end of the 1980s the establishment took the form of a self-service restaurant, buffet, and wine bar with a capacity of 50 visitors; guests could also use a poultry grill. The buffet premises underwent reconstruction in 1993 and continued to operate on a tray system (diners place food on their tray, pay at the cash desk, then carry it to a table to eat). In early 2008 the establishment had to leave its original premises because the building owner planned to rent them to other businesses and also set up a café there. The restaurant operator found new premises across the street in the Bílá labuť department store building. In early 2015, however, the restaurant operator filed for bankruptcy, owing 6.85 million Czech korunas while the accounting value of the company's assets did not even reach 250,000 korunas. The canteen's operation did not cease, because the trademark, employees, and premises were purchased from the insolvent original owner by the company Kappa Asset, which continued to run the restaurant. The restaurant was closed as of 31 October 2024. In 2025 the U Rozvařilů canteen changed owners and reopened on 15 December 2025. After a change of management and interior modifications, this legendary establishment returns to its roots—maintaining the traditional concept of a Czech canteen, strengthening emphasis on the quality of ingredients, and expanding its offer with grilled dishes and freshwater fish from local sources. The new team, led by chef Josef Pála, does not hide its ambition to build on the establishment's long history and present its "new era" in the spirit of honest Czech cuisine.
