Overview

U Pinkasů is a historic Czech restaurant and pub located on Jungmannovo náměstí in Prague's New Town, adjacent to the Franciscan monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Snows. Founded in 1854 by Jakub Pinkas, it is the oldest continuously operating pub in Prague and is renowned for its association with Pilsner Urquell. The establishment has been a significant social and political gathering place, hosting figures such as František Palacký, T. G. Masaryk, and Bohumil Hrabal. After decades of operation by the Brabec family, it was nationalized in 1948 and later restituted in 1991. Since 2001, it has been owned by Adria – Neptun, which also owns Hotel Adria and other properties. The restaurant continues to serve traditional Czech cuisine and tank beer, and hosts the annual 'Pinkasova noční můra' beer-tapping competition.

History

U Pinkasů was founded in 1854 by Jakub Pinkas (1804–1879), a former tailor who moved to Prague from Budětice in southwestern Bohemia. In 1853 he purchased house No. 755 on what is now Jungmannovo náměstí, then known as the House at St. Lawrence, and on 17 April 1854 obtained a concession to operate a hostelry. Before 1854 he had worked as a canteen operator at the institute for the mentally ill in Karlov and later ran the brewery pub 'U Lemonů' at the corner of Národní třída and Perlová street. In 1845, Pinkas asked his friend Martin Salzmann to bring him the new lager from Plzeň; on 8 April 1845 two buckets (about 122 liters) of Pilsner beer were delivered, marking the beginning of the pub's association with Pilsner Urquell. As demand grew, Pinkas expanded the cellar spaces, connecting them through an opening in the unfinished northern nave of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows. In 1876, Otto Pinkas, continuing the family tradition, purchased the adjacent house No. 756. In 1901, František Brabec, who became the new tenant in 1882, had both houses rebuilt, adding a common three-arm staircase. From 1882 until nationalization in 1948, the Brabec family operated the restaurant under the name 'Brabcova plzeňská restaurace U Pinkasů'. František Brabec (1854–1935) was a respected innkeeper and a long-time member of the Central Union of Czechoslovak Hospitality 'Hostimil'. After 1989, the heirs of František Brabec filed restitution claims, and at the end of 1991 they reopened the restaurant after renovations, operating it until mid-2001, when the entire property was purchased by Adria – Neptun, which owns Hotel Adria and other establishments. Since 2010 (with a pause in 2020 due to COVID-19), the restaurant has held an annual event called 'Pinkasova noční můra' (Pinkas's Nightmare) in early October, where registered tapsters pour ten half-liters, run up 41 stairs, and present the lager to a jury. The pub has been a significant social and political venue, frequented by figures such as Palacký, Rieger, Jungmann, T. G. Masaryk, Jan Masaryk, and artists like Voskovec, Werich, and Bohumil Hrabal.
