Overview

TVP Info is a Polish free-to-air television news channel operated by Telewizja Polska, Poland's public broadcasting organization. Its core role is the continuous distribution of national news, breaking-news coverage, political interviews, current-affairs discussion, reports and public-service information. The channel is primarily aimed at audiences in Poland and is distributed through digital terrestrial television, satellite, cable and online platforms. The channel was launched in October 2007, replacing TVP3 as TVP's principal national news service. In its initial form, TVP Info combined a nationwide news operation with regional programming. It maintained branches in many major Polish cities and, for several hours each day, carried regional news and reporting in sixteen versions. That regional function was transferred in September 2013 to the revived TVP Regionalna service, later renamed TVP3, allowing TVP Info to concentrate more fully on national news and political coverage. TVP Info developed its technical distribution over time. It had previously been available through Astra satellite transmission, although that service ended on 31 December 2014 for economic reasons. The channel adopted a 16:9 format in February 2011. Its high-definition simulcast began on digital terrestrial television on 30 September 2016 and reached Hot Bird satellite distribution on 5 April 2017, after which the satellite standard-definition feed was discontinued. TVP later planned further technical improvements, including 1080i50 production and studio changes. The channel's editorial identity became a major subject of public debate after the Law and Justice party won the 2015 parliamentary election. Legislation adopted in December 2015 gave the government direct control over the management of public media. Critics, including Reporters Without Borders, argued that TVP and TVP Info became closely aligned with the government's political priorities. During this period, the channel was frequently discussed in relation to public-media independence, political polarization and the boundary between public broadcasting and government communication. TVP Info also served as an outlet for international-facing content. In November 2021, TVP launched TVP World, an English-language news service that was initially simulcast on TVP Info during late-night hours. Its launch was brought forward amid heightened attention to the Polish-Belarusian border and what TVP described as Russian and Belarusian disinformation. TVP World later moved toward a 24-hour schedule and became a distinct international service. A major interruption occurred on 20 December 2023, after Poland's newly formed parliamentary majority adopted a resolution calling for the restoration of legal order in public broadcasting. TVP Info went off air shortly after the culture minister announced the dismissal of the existing management and supervisory boards of TVP, Polish Radio and the Polish Press Agency. The channel's television and web services were temporarily replaced or redirected to other TVP programming. TVP World was also taken off air, and its operations were formally suspended later that month. TVP Info resumed broadcasting on 29 December 2023 under new management and with a revised editorial presentation. The relaunch began alongside the new 19.30 news bulletin and was followed by current-affairs programming. The revived channel stated that it would seek to represent multiple viewpoints and reduce political division. Several programs associated with the former lineup were retained, while some more overtly partisan programs were discontinued. The website and YouTube presence were restored in January 2024, with access to selected archived material also reinstated. The channel continued changing its programming and production arrangements during 2024. It introduced or reorganized discussion and news programs, moved into a different studio configuration and prepared a broader visual refresh…

History

TVP Info was created as part of a restructuring of Polish public television news. It replaced TVP3 in October 2007 and became Telewizja Polska's principal national news channel. In its early years, the service combined nationwide bulletins with regional programming. Regional branches in major Polish cities supplied local news and reports in sixteen versions, which allowed the channel to function partly as a national news network and partly as a regional window. This arrangement ended in September 2013, when the regional component was moved to the revived TVP Regionalna service, later renamed TVP3. The channel's distribution and production developed through several technical stages. TVP Info had been distributed via Astra 19.2°E from 2005, before that satellite service was discontinued on 31 December 2014 because of economic considerations. The channel adopted widescreen 16:9 broadcasting on 23 February 2011. After several years of planning and announcements, TVP Info HD began on digital terrestrial television and cable networks on 30 September 2016. Satellite HD distribution followed on Hot Bird on 5 April 2017, and the satellite SD feed was closed later that month. TVP also discussed a later move to 1080i50 production and a redesign of the principal studio. TVP Info's editorial role became increasingly controversial after the Law and Justice party won the 2015 parliamentary election. A media law adopted in December of that year gave the government direct influence over the appointment and control of public-media management. TVP Info consequently became an important focus of criticism concerning political bias, public-broadcasting independence and the use of a publicly funded channel to communicate government positions. Reporters Without Borders was among the organizations that criticized the degree of political control over Polish public media. The channel's news and discussion output remained central to national political debate, regardless of disagreement over its editorial character. In November 2021, TVP launched TVP World, an English-language international channel. The launch was brought forward from an initially planned January 2022 date, with TVP citing the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and the need to respond to what it described as disinformation from Russia and Belarus. TVP World was initially simulcast on TVP Info late at night and subsequently moved toward continuous international broadcasting. Its existence extended the TVP Info news operation beyond a solely domestic audience, although TVP World remained a related service rather than a replacement for the Polish-language channel. The most disruptive event in TVP Info's history occurred in December 2023. On 19 December, Poland's Sejm adopted a resolution demanding the restoration of legal order in public media. The following day, culture minister Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz announced the dismissal of the existing presidents and supervisory boards of TVP, Polish Radio and the Polish Press Agency. TVP Info then ceased its normal broadcast at 11:18:31 CET on 20 December. Its website redirected to the general TVP site, while television output alternated among selected TVP1 and TVP Polonia programming, repeats and standby material. TVP World was also taken off air and its website redirected. A temporary suspension of TVP World operations was formally announced on 27 December. TVP Info returned on 29 December 2023. The relaunch opened with the newly introduced 19.30 bulletin, followed by a current-affairs segment and the return of Minęła 20 under presenter Jarosław Kulczycki. The first post-relaunch bulletin was presented by Zbigniew Łuczyński. Executives stated that the renewed channel would give space to different sides and seek to reduce political division. Some established programs, including Minęła, Forum and Woronicza 17, continued, while more politically charged programs such as W tyle wizji were not resumed. The initial relaunch presentation reused parts of the previous visual package but added new filler imagery and a newsroom background based on droplets joining into a larger form. The digital service returned in stages. The TVP Info website and YouTube channel were restored on 15 January 2024, together with selected archive access. Andrzej Jaszczyszyn was identified as head of the restored tvp.info service. Programming was reorganized during January and March, including changes to the public-affairs schedule and the introduction or return of additional programs. Production arrangements also changed, with the channel using studio facilities associated with TVP's Warsaw operations. TVP announced a further studio and logo redesign in August 2024; the new presentation entered use on 30 September from Studio S-11 at TVP headquarters. On 21 March 2025, TVP Info extended its distribution by starting a YouTube broadcast. The channel remains active as a national Polish news service whose institutional role is closely linked to the governance and editorial direction of Telewizja Polska.
