Overview

T.V.O.R. Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte — also known as T.V.O.R. Chaoszine — was an Italian hardcore punk fanzine and independent record label founded in Como in 1981 by Stiv "Rottame" Valli (formerly of Orda) and Marco "Maniglia" Medici (of Crash Box). The acronym was initially inspired by T.S.O.L. and meant "True Voice of Rebels", but it was later reinterpreted as the more memorable "Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte". The first issue appeared in September 1981 in a print run of 500 copies, created to circulate news about the Italian and international punk and hardcore scene at a time when, without the web, information travelled only through DIY networks. The fanzine ran for five issues over five years, growing from 500 copies in 1981 to 3,000 copies with issue no. 5 in 1985, all distributed strictly by mail worldwide. Its graphic style was largely cut-up collage — band photos, ironically dressed politicians, urban guerrilla imagery, punk slogans and circled "A"s — pasted on black backgrounds in a Crass-inspired style, with articles deliberately short enough to be read while listening to one punk song. Contents included translations of lyrics by Crass, Discharge and Black Flag, concert and Italian tour reviews, and articles on D.O.A., Disorder, the earliest Bad Religion, Italian bands Wretched and Blue Vomit, and the Meat Puppets, as well as pieces on straight edge, the Chaos Tag in Hannover, and more than 30 active Italian fanzines. Issue no. 5 (1984–85) ran to 104 pages and featured photographs by US scene photographers such as Ed Colver, Glen E. Friedman, Murray Bowles and Tim Tonooka, after Stiv Valli's Crash Box toured the United States in 1984 and were hosted by Tim Yo of Maximumrocknroll. Tim Yo and Jello Biafra described the fanzine as one of the most beautiful in the world. In parallel with the fanzine, in 1983 Valli and Medici began releasing cassette albums under the Ossa Rotte Tapes imprint, starting with a recording of Black Flag's 22 February 1983 concert at Odissea 2001 in Milan, and going on to release Italian bands such as Negazione, Declino and Crash Box. In 1985 they launched the vinyl label TVOR On Vinyl, whose first release was the album Osservati dall'inganno by Indigesti. The label went on to produce much of the Piedmontese and Lombard hardcore punk scene, including Crash Box, Upset Noise, Negazione, Ifix Tcen Tcen, Disper-Azione, Peggio Punx, Upside, Impact, Punkreas, Shandon, Glare, Atrox and Raw Power. The TVOR On Vinyl label continued its activity even after the fanzine ceased publication. The project is documented in Stiv Rottame Valli's book Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte 1980-1985 storia di una caoszine hardcore punx (Edizioni LoveHate80, 2006).

History

T.V.O.R. Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte, also known as T.V.O.R. Chaoszine, was an Italian hardcore punk fanzine founded in 1981 in Como. The project was conceived and developed by Stiv "Rottame" Valli, a former member of Orda, and Marco "Maniglia" Medici of Crash Box. The acronym was initially inspired by the band T.S.O.L. (True Sound of Liberty) and was meant to stand for "True Voice of Rebels"; only later did it take on the more memorable meaning "Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte". The first issue was published in September 1981 in a print run of 500 copies, created to fill the need to circulate news about the Italian and international punk and hardcore scene at a time when, without the web, information was available only through DIY circuits that sought to reclaim the means of cultural production. The cover of the first issue took inspiration from a D.O.A. record cover, while the graphics were mostly a cut-up of images of bands, politicians dressed ironically, urban guerrilla scenes, punk slogans and circled "A"s, all pasted on a black background in a Crass-inspired style. The reading time of articles was programmatically matched to the length of a punk song, making them simple and direct. Early issues included translations of lyrics by English bands such as Crass, Discharge and Black Flag, reviews of concerts and Italian tours, and articles on D.O.A., Disorder, the earliest Bad Religion, Italian bands Wretched and Blue Vomit, and the Meat Puppets. There were also articles on aspects of the punk hardcore movement such as straight edge, on events such as the Chaos Tag in Hannover, and articles covering more than 30 fanzines active in Italy (Archaeopteryx, Punkaminazione, Anti-Utopia, G.D.H.C., Echo, Distrofia and many others). Over five issues published in five years, the fanzine grew from the initial 500 copies in 1981 to 3,000 copies with issue no. 5 in 1985, all distributed strictly by mail worldwide. In 1984, Stiv Valli and his band Crash Box toured the United States and were hosted by Tim Yo, who gave them free access to the Maximumrocknroll photographic archives. The 104-page issue no. 5 of TVOR therefore featured numerous images by US scene photographers such as Ed Colver, Glen E. Friedman, Murray Bowles and Tim Tonooka. Also important were the many articles comparing the different customs and practices of the American and Italian scenes. The fanzine was described by Tim Yo of Maximumrocknroll and by Jello Biafra as one of the most beautiful fanzines in the world. In 1983, alongside the fanzine, Stiv Valli and Marco Maniglia began releasing cassette albums by Italian bands and recordings of American bands' concerts in Italy under the Ossa Rotte Tapes imprint. The first release was the recording of Black Flag's concert on 22 February 1983 at Odissea 2001 in Milan. In the following years the label released numerous Italian bands such as Negazione, Declino and Crash Box. Only later, after gaining record experience with Ossa Rotte Tapes, did TVOR On Vinyl emerge, with which Rottame and Maniglia would release much of the Piedmontese and Lombard hardcore punk scene. In 1985, under the TVOR On Vinyl imprint, Rottame and Maniglia inaugurated the new label by releasing as its first edition the album Osservati dall'inganno by Indigesti. Many Italian hardcore punk bands were produced under this imprint: Crash Box, Upset Noise, Negazione, Ifix Tcen Tcen, Disper-Azione, Peggio Punx, Upside, Impact, Punkreas, Shandon, Glare, Atrox, Raw Power and many others. The TVOR On Vinyl label continued its activity even after the closure of the fanzine. The history of the project is documented in Stiv Rottame Valli's book Teste Vuote Ossa Rotte 1980-1985 storia di una caoszine hardcore punx (Milan, Edizioni LoveHate80, 2006).
