TVB, formally Television Broadcasts Limited and now commonly branded as TVB Limited, is a Hong Kong television broadcaster, production company and content-distribution business. It began terrestrial broadcasting on 19 November 1967 after winning the Hong Kong government's franchise for a second television station. The launch introduced a wireless, free-to-air alternative to the territory's existing wired subscription broadcaster and gave the company the Chinese name 無綫電視, commonly shortened in Hong Kong to 無綫, or “Wireless.” The company operates a portfolio of television services, with TVB Jade as its principal Cantonese channel and TVB Pearl as its principal English-language channel. In the early 1960s, the Hong Kong government examined the creation of a second television service. The territory's only broadcaster at the time was Rediffusion Television, a wired subscription service. Policymakers considered public, commercial and mixed ownership models, while prospective operators faced the practical problem of producing enough Chinese-language programming for a new station. A franchise tender opened in February 1965 and closed in August of that year. Television Broadcasts Limited was incorporated in July 1965 and was associated with Sir Run Run Shaw, Sir Douglas Clague and Harold Lee Hsiao-wo. In January 1966, the company was selected from seven competing bids. The award established the basis for a commercial wireless television service rather than another subscription cable network. TVB formally opened on 19 November 1967 from premises at 77 Broadcast Drive in Kowloon Tong. Its first day's coverage included the Macau Grand Prix and an opening ceremony. Planning for a new site at Tseung Kwan O began in the late 1990s. The new TVB City, with substantially greater floor area and large audience studios, came fully into operation in 2003 and remains the company's principal production base.
