History

Tvar was founded in 1990 by Pavel Janoušek and Michal Třeštík as a literary weekly. It was published weekly (52 issues per year) from 1990 to 1993, with the subtitle 'literární týdeník' (literary weekly). In April 1993, the Klub přátel Tvaru (Club of Friends of Tvar) was established as a civic association to publish the magazine, following the model of other non-commercial literary magazines that found civic associations to be the most economically and legally advantageous publishers. The club's first chair was Lubor Kasal (April–December 1993), succeeded by Pavel Janoušek (December 1993–2024). From 1994, the magazine changed to a biweekly schedule (21 issues per year, excluding July and August) and adopted the subtitle 'literární obtýdeník' (literary biweekly). The magazine has maintained a consistent focus on contemporary Czech literature, publishing original poetry, prose, interviews, cultural journalism, and literary studies, as well as approximately 270 book reviews annually. Over the decades, many prominent Czech writers, critics, and scholars have served on its editorial board, including Anna Cermanová, Jana Červenková, Jana Hádková, Emil Hakl, Ondřej Hanus, Wanda Heinrichová, Ondřej Horák, Pavel Janáček, Michal Jareš, Roman Kanda, Lubor Kasal, Pavel Kosatík, Naděžda Macurová, Jan Nejedlý, Eva Němcová, Věra Pašková, Gabriel Pleska, Ilona Sánchezová, Ivo Slavík, Božena Správcová, Jakub Šofar, Hana Štěpánková, Štefan Švec, and Michal Škrabal. In 2025, Viktorie Hanišová became chair of the club. The magazine continues to publish and maintains an online presence at itvar.cz, as well as a digitized archive.
