Overview
TV2 Kids is a Hungarian children's television channel owned and operated by the TV2 Csoport. It was originally launched on 26 September 2016 under the name Kiwi TV, broadcasting its first programme, the animated series "A dinoszauruszok királya" (King of the Dinosaurs), at 13:00. The channel was rebranded as TV2 Kids on 17 August 2020 at 05:00, as part of a wider effort to unify the TV2 channel portfolio. The name and logo had been trademarked on 17 December 2019, alongside TV2 Comedy. The channel targets a young audience and broadcasts children's programming, much of which consists of series that had already premiered and been dubbed on other Hungarian channels rather than being national premieres. Several of its programmes originate from TV2 Matiné, TV2's children's programming block. Its original visual identity, designed by Umbrella, was used until 29 October 2018, when it was replaced by a CGI-based world featuring characters Kati and Koati, designed by Play Dead; this identity is still used by TV2 Kids, with the logo appearing in 3D form. Like several other cable channels of the TV2 Csoport, TV2 Kids falls under the supervision of Romania's National Audiovisual Council (CNA), which has led to the appearance of the Romanian "AP" (parental guidance) rating on some programmes, including family-friendly cartoons. Since 16 March 2022, catch-up viewing of the channel's programmes is available exclusively with a TV2 Play Prémium subscription. Advertising time on the channel was sold by Atmedia until 1 January 2024, after which the channel became advertising-free.
History
The channel first showed signs of preparation on 25 April 2016, when its name was trademarked. On 9 May 2016, one day before the channel's launch was announced, the originally planned balloon-like logo was trademarked, but it was later abandoned. The launch was announced on 10 May 2016 at the Media Hungary 2016 conference. The logo used at that time was trademarked on 11 August 2016 at the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office. On 12 September 2016, it was announced that the channel would begin broadcasting on 26 September. The channel launched on 26 September 2016 at 13:00, with its first programme being the animated series "A dinoszauruszok királya" (King of the Dinosaurs). Its original visual identity was designed by Umbrella and was used until 29 October 2018. It was then replaced by a CGI-based world featuring Kati and Koati as main characters. This identity is also used by TV2 Kids. In the new identity, the channel's logo appears in 3D form. The identity was designed by Play Dead. Like several other cable channels of the TV2 Csoport, the channel came under the supervision of Romania's National Audiovisual Council (CNA). As a result, the Romanian age-rating system's "AP" (parental guidance) label appeared on programmes, indicating content requiring parental permission and adult supervision. This rating was applied in several cases even to cartoons specifically intended for children and explicitly family-friendly. On the TV2 Csoport's movie channels, by contrast, a wider range of content may appear in the "AP" category. For the channel's Hungarian programmes, weekend matinee broadcasts accordingly saw several cartoons aired with a Hungarian age rating of "not recommended for under 12s". This can be considered disproportionately strict for some programmes made specifically for children. On 17 December 2019, TV2 trademarked the name and logo of TV2 Kids together with TV2 Comedy. When the renaming of Humor+ to TV2 Comedy was announced, the possibility of renaming Kiwi TV had already arisen. On 4 June 2020, it was announced that the channel would continue under the name TV2 Kids, as part of the process aimed at unifying the TV2 channel portfolio. On 3 August, TV2 published the channel's first teaser. Kiwi TV took the name TV2 Kids on 17 August 2020 at 05:00. Since 16 March 2022, catch-up viewing of the channel's programmes is available exclusively with a TV2 Play Prémium subscription. The channel's advertising time was sold by Atmedia until 1 January 2024, after which the channel became advertising-free. Most of the series broadcast did not debut as national premieres, but were already shown and dubbed by other Hungarian channels. Several of its series came from the offering of TV2's children's programming block, TV2 Matiné.
