Overview

TV Vitória is a television broadcaster headquartered in Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The station operates on channel 6 and serves as an affiliate of Record throughout the state. It is part of Rede Vitória de Comunicação, a media group controlled by the Buaiz Group, which also operates radio outlets including Jovem Pan FM Vitória and Jovem Pan News Vitória. The station began broadcasting on September 8, 1961, becoming the first television station established in Espírito Santo. It was launched by Diários Associados on the anniversary of Vitória and initially combined locally produced programming with retransmissions from TV Tupi São Paulo, whose network later developed into Rede Tupi. Although it began operating before holding a formal concession, its regulatory status was regularized in June 1979. Following the closure of Rede Tupi in 1980, TV Vitória passed through a period of independent and transitional programming, including content from TVS Rio de Janeiro and Record. In 1981 it became one of the early affiliates of SBT. In 1984, Diários Associados sold the station and Rádio Vitória to the Buaiz Group after a transaction involving João Calmon and Américo Buaiz Filho. TV Vitória then affiliated with Rede Manchete. The station developed a stronger regional-information role in the 1990s. In 1992 it introduced Rede Vitória de Notícias, a collaborative arrangement with newspapers from the interior of Espírito Santo. Newspaper reporters supplied material for broadcast by telephone, while the television station credited the participating publications. The arrangement ended after approximately two years when participating newspapers began seeking payment for their contributions. After negotiations lasting roughly two and a half years and amid the decline of Rede Manchete, TV Vitória joined Record on October 1, 1998. The affiliation connected the local broadcaster to Record's expanding national network while preserving a substantial schedule of Espírito Santo news, public-affairs, lifestyle, business, agricultural, entertainment, and competition programming. TV Vitória maintains studios at the Buaiz Group headquarters in Parque Moscoso and commercial offices in Praia do Canto. Its transmission facilities are located at the summit of Morro da Fonte Grande. As part of Brazil's transition from analog to digital television, the station ended its analog VHF transmission on channel 6 at 11:59 p.m. on October 25, 2017, in accordance with the schedule established by the national telecommunications authorities. Its current identity combines Record network programming with locally produced shows aimed at viewers across Espírito Santo.

History

TV Vitória began broadcasting on September 8, 1961, in Vitória, Espírito Santo, as the first television station in the state. Diários Associados launched the station on the anniversary of Espírito Santo's capital. Its early schedule combined local production with programs retransmitted from TV Tupi São Paulo, which later became associated with the development of Rede Tupi. The station initially operated without a television concession, and its legal status was regularized in June 1979 under Communications Minister Haroldo Corrêa de Mattos. When Rede Tupi ended operations in 1980, TV Vitória was among the Diários Associados stations that avoided revocation. It subsequently maintained a mixed schedule, including independent programming and temporary retransmissions from TVS Rio de Janeiro and Record. In 1981, it became one of SBT's first affiliates. Ownership changed in 1984. Diários Associados sold TV Vitória and Rádio Vitória to the Buaiz Group after businessman João Calmon acquired shares from other shareholders and resold the station to Américo Buaiz Filho. That same year, TV Vitória affiliated with Rede Manchete. In 1992, the broadcaster created Rede Vitória de Notícias, a cooperative news-distribution project involving newspapers from municipalities outside the capital. During broadcasts, reporters from participating newspapers provided information by telephone. In exchange, the station identified the newspapers in its credits. The project lasted about two years and ended after the newspapers sought compensation that the broadcaster did not agree to provide. TV Vitória changed affiliations again on October 1, 1998. Following approximately two and a half years of negotiations and the weakening of Rede Manchete, the station joined Record, which was expanding its national network. The affiliation became the basis for the station's current combination of national network programming and locally produced content. The broadcaster's facilities include studios at the Buaiz Group headquarters in Parque Moscoso, commercial offices in Praia do Canto, and transmitters on Morro da Fonte Grande. Its local schedule has included multiple news editions, police and general-interest reporting, variety programming, business and agricultural shows, culinary competitions, and startup-focused content. TV Vitória completed the analog-to-digital transition on October 25, 2017. At 11:59 p.m. that day, it ended its analog transmission on VHF channel 6 in accordance with the national timetable for Brazilian television digitization.
