Overview

TV União (Fortaleza) is a Brazilian commercial television station headquartered in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará state. It broadcasts on virtual channel 17.1 and serves as the flagship generator of Rede União, an inter-regional network with affiliates in three other Brazilian state capitals. The station was launched on 30 November 2001 by businessman José Alberto Bardawil, who had previously founded TV União stations in Rio Branco (1988) and Brasília (1997). In its first year, TV União Fortaleza aired only music videos. From 2002, under superintendent Pompeu Vasconcelos, it developed a youth-oriented schedule blending music, journalism and cultural programming. The station became known for interactive services such as Papo União, which allowed viewers to send mobile phone messages displayed on screen in real time; at its peak, this service reportedly accounted for 50–60% of the station's commercial revenue. In the 2010s, TV União reduced youth programming, faced financial difficulties including delayed salaries and replacement of journalists with interns, and shifted toward news and other genres. It launched digital transmission in 2010 and ended analog operations in 2017. Since 2025, it has partnered with Rede Mult TV for production and simultaneous broadcasting of programs. The station remains active and is part of the Rede União network.

History

TV União (Fortaleza) was launched on 30 November 2001 by businessman José Alberto Bardawil, who had acquired the concession for channel 17 UHF in Fortaleza in 1997 in partnership with singer Raimundo Fagner. The station joined existing TV União stations in Rio Branco (founded 1988) and Brasília (founded 1997) to form the Rede União network. Until 2002, the Fortaleza station dedicated its programming entirely to music videos, occasionally airing leased programs and artistic segments presented by Karine Alexandrino, the station's first VJ. In September 2002, journalist Pompeu Vasconcelos became superintendent, initiating a phase of change. In early 2003, a contest selected two VJs, Natália Nara and Dan Viana, from 1,800 female and 950 male applicants. From June 2003, TV União launched a new youth-oriented schedule mixing music videos with cultural and journalistic attractions. By 2004, a Marplan survey indicated a 25% audience share among viewers aged 10 to 24 in Fortaleza, placing it third behind TV Verdes Mares and TV Jangadeiro. In early 2005, the station's signal was carried on the NSS-806 satellite, enabling national expansion. In March 2005, it launched Papo União, an interactive SMS service in partnership with Oi, later extended to other operators. By 2007, Papo União reportedly received four million messages per month and accounted for 50–60% of commercial revenue. In late 2007, programming was expanded to include sustainability, sports, cooking and digital art. In 2009, Esporte Interativo productions aired briefly. Around 2010, entertainment shows were reduced in favor of news, and digital transmission began on physical channel 18 UHF (virtual 17.1). Analog operations on channel 17 UHF ceased on 27 September 2017. In the 2010s, financial problems led to delayed salaries and replacement of journalists with interns. In 2025, a partnership with Rede Mult TV was formed for production and simultaneous broadcasting.
