Overview

TV Liberal Castanhal is a Brazilian television station headquartered in Castanhal, in the state of Pará. It broadcasts on channel 11 (49 UHF digital) and is affiliated with TV Globo, Brazil's leading television network. The station is an owned-and-operated outlet of Rede Liberal, the Globo affiliate network in Pará, which belongs to Grupo Liberal, one of the most prominent media groups in northern Brazil. The station began as a retransmitter of TV Liberal in 1989, initially operating experimentally on channel 9 before receiving its own concession on channel 11. Commercial operations started on August 8, 1989. For most of its history, TV Liberal Castanhal has primarily relayed the national programming of TV Globo and the statewide output of Rede Liberal, while inserting local commercials. Its only locally produced program was a local edition of the newsmagazine Liberal Comunidade, which was suspended in 1998 and had its final local broadcast on August 26, 2001, in compliance with regulations prohibiting local programming on retransmitters. The station activated its digital signal on November 6, 2019, on channel 49 UHF digital, becoming the second station in the Rede Liberal network to adopt digital technology, after TV Liberal Marabá. Initially broadcasting in SDTV, it upgraded to HDTV on February 18, 2020, following the installation of a digital master control. The station also maintains a local news presence through its website and social media channels, and it participates in community events such as the Corrida do Círio, a major road race in the Amazon region. As part of Rede Liberal, TV Liberal Castanhal contributes to the group's regional coverage, though its local production remains limited. The station's history includes a notable incident in 1997 when reporter Rivan Jatene was held hostage and shot while covering a prison rebellion, and a labor strike in 2019 over working conditions and wages. Today, it continues to serve Castanhal and surrounding areas with Globo and Rede Liberal programming, local advertising, and occasional event coverage.

History

TV Liberal Castanhal began in January 1989, when it was announced that Castanhal would gain a new television channel, initially planned as a retransmitter of TV Liberal on channel 9. On April 26, 1989, TV Liberal received a concession for channel 11 in the municipality. The station went on air experimentally on May 21, 1989, with plans to launch local programming. Commercial operations commenced on August 8, 1989. On November 13, 1997, reporter Rivan Jatene was taken hostage by inmates and shot twice, once in the abdomen and once in the leg, while covering a rebellion at the Fernando Guilhon state prison. Cameraman Paulo Roberto Silva and two prison guards were also held hostage. Jatene was taken by ambulance to Hospital São José in Castanhal and survived. On August 26, 2001, TV Liberal Castanhal aired the final local edition of Liberal Comunidade, its only local program, presented by Rivan Jatene. The newscast had already been suspended in 1998 due to compliance with a prohibition on local programming on retransmitters. On March 22, 2019, employees of the station staged a work stoppage. The reasons cited were the accumulation of duties and demands for salary increases. Professionals claimed they performed up to four different roles while receiving a salary equivalent to only one. The station activated its digital signal on November 6, 2019, on channel 49 UHF digital, becoming the second station in the network (after TV Liberal Marabá) to adopt the technology. Initially, programming was transmitted in SDTV quality. On February 18, 2020, after the installation of a digital master control, the quality was upgraded to HDTV. Throughout its history, the station has primarily relayed national programming from TV Globo and statewide programming from Rede Liberal, inserting local commercials. Its only locally produced program was the local edition of Liberal Comunidade. Current team members include Noriel Magalhães; former members include Patrícia Baía and Rivan Jatene.
