Overview

TV Integração Juiz de Fora is a Brazilian television station based in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. It operates as a regional affiliate of TV Globo and serves as the flagship broadcasting property of Rede Integração in the Zona da Mata and neighboring areas of the state. The station is identified with channel 8 in its current local branding and has a long history that began under a different name, TV Industrial. TV Industrial was founded by the Mendes family and began broadcasting on July 29, 1964. Sérgio Mendes and his sons Gudesteu Mendes and Geraldo Mendes were responsible for establishing the station, which was based near Morro do Imperador. In its early decades, the broadcaster developed an unusually strong local-production profile for a station outside Brazil's largest metropolitan centers. Its schedule included journalism, cultural programs, sports, educational content, auditorium shows and other locally produced formats, while films filled part of the remaining airtime. The station became known for technical and programming initiatives. It used a helical antenna and was described as the first station in South America to transmit with that type of antenna. It was also regarded as an early color broadcaster in the interior of Minas Gerais. TV Industrial carried a live broadcast of Pelé's thousandth goal in 1969, an event that became one of the most remembered moments in its history. During the 1970s, its auditorium hosted live entertainment programming, including a Sunday-afternoon show presented by Wilson Simonal. TV Industrial participated in the Rede de Emissoras Independentes and carried programs from several Brazilian networks and stations, including TV Record of São Paulo, TV Tupi, TV Rio and TV Gazeta. It also signed a 1977 protocol of intentions concerning a possible relationship with Rede Gazeta de Televisão, although that proposed network did not take shape. The station received recognition for its programming, including a 1974 award from the government of Guanabara for its presence at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã stadium. Its educational program Sistema was later associated with the ideas that influenced Telecurso 2º Grau. Despite its popularity, the independent station faced high operating expenses, limited advertising revenue and continuing losses. Its deficits were reportedly covered in part by profits from Rádio Industrial. After the deaths of Sérgio Mendes and Gudesteu Mendes, and as the financial situation worsened, Geraldo Mendes sold the television station to Roberto Marinho in April 1980. The transaction ended TV Industrial's period as an independent broadcaster. The station was renamed TV Globo Juiz de Fora and began operating on a new frequency, channel 5, on April 14, 1980. The former channel 10 frequency was later used by TV Alterosa Zona da Mata. The station subsequently became part of the changing structure of Brazilian regional television. During the late 1990s, TV Globo pursued greater regionalization of journalism through its affiliates. In the early 2000s, however, the network began selling some interior affiliates to local business groups. In Juiz de Fora, the affiliate became TV Panorama under the control of businessman Omar Rezende Peres, who also obtained a radio concession and established a local newspaper. Rede Integração acquired a stake in TV Panorama in 2007, expanding its operations into Zona da Mata and bringing four of the then eight TV Globo stations in Minas Gerais under its control. On February 8, 2012, Rede Integração announced the acquisition of the remaining 50 percent of TV Panorama. The transaction made Rede Integração the sole owner of the broadcasting rights in Zona da Mata, Campo das Vertentes and Serra da Mantiqueira. The Juiz de Fora station is now presented under the TV Integração brand within the broader Rede Integração regional media network.

History

The station's history began with TV Industrial, established by Sérgio Mendes and his sons Gudesteu Mendes and Geraldo Mendes in Juiz de Fora. It signed on July 29, 1964, and operated from the Morro do Imperador area. As an independent broadcaster, it placed substantial emphasis on locally produced television, including news, cultural programs, sports, educational shows and auditorium entertainment. Films and programming acquired from other stations filled the remainder of its schedule. TV Industrial was notable for its technical experimentation and regional reach. It was described as the first South American station to use a helical antenna and as the first broadcaster in the interior of Minas Gerais to produce and transmit color programming. The station also became associated with several important broadcasts. It carried Pelé's thousandth goal live in 1969 and aired a wide range of sports, including extensive coverage from Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã stadium. A 1974 award from the government of Guanabara recognized the station as the broadcaster most present at the stadium during that year, when it transmitted 174 matches. Its educational program Sistema was later cited as an inspiration for Telecurso 2º Grau. In the 1970s, TV Industrial joined the Rede de Emissoras Independentes, carrying material from TV Record in São Paulo. It also acquired or relayed programs from TV Tupi, TV Rio and TV Gazeta. A 1977 protocol of intentions contemplated participation in Rede Gazeta de Televisão, but the proposed network was never formed. The station's claim to be the first television station in the interior of Brazil was later disputed by residents of Juiz de Fora and by people in other cities, including Bauru, where TV Bauru had begun operating in 1959. The independent business model became increasingly difficult to sustain. TV Industrial faced high operating costs, weak advertising income and recurring losses. Rádio Industrial helped cover the television operation's deficits, but the financial pressure intensified after the deaths of Sérgio Mendes and Gudesteu Mendes. Geraldo Mendes sold the station to Roberto Marinho in April 1980. The sale ended the original broadcaster's independent existence, and the station was renamed TV Globo Juiz de Fora. It began transmitting on a new frequency, channel 5, on April 14, 1980. The old channel 10 assignment was subsequently used by TV Alterosa Zona da Mata. The station's historical archive was reportedly discarded by a former employee at the Rio Paraibuna. Rede Globo's regional strategy changed over time. In 1998, the network launched a regionalization initiative intended to strengthen journalism produced by affiliates across Brazil. From 2003 onward, it began selling some affiliates located outside the main metropolitan markets to local entrepreneurs or groups. In Juiz de Fora, the station came under the control of businessman Omar Rezende Peres and operated as TV Panorama. Peres also obtained a radio concession and created a printed newspaper in the city. Rede Integração entered the Juiz de Fora operation in 2007 by acquiring part of TV Panorama. This expanded the group's footprint into Zona da Mata and gave it control of four of the eight TV Globo stations then operating in Minas Gerais. On February 8, 2012, Rede Integração announced that it had purchased the remaining 50 percent of TV Panorama. The group consequently became the sole owner of the broadcasting rights covering Zona da Mata, Campo das Vertentes and Serra da Mantiqueira. The station is now associated with the TV Integração brand and remains a regional TV Globo affiliate, combining network programming with locally relevant reporting and other regional content.
