TV Globo DF

TV Globo DF is the Globo television station licensed to Brasília, the federal capital of Brazil. Historically identified as TV Globo Brasília, the station began broadcasting on April 21, 1971, coinciding with Brasília's 11th anniversary. It operates as an owned-and-operated outlet of Globo, the television arm of Grupo Globo, and combines locally produced journalism with programming supplied by the national Globo network. The station was conceived during the expansion of Organizações Globo's television operations. The federal concession to establish a Brasília station was granted on April 27, 1962, although the outlet did not begin broadcasting until several years later. Before the station's own launch, Globo programming reached the capital through TV Nacional, a government-controlled broadcaster, from 1967 to 1969. After a preparation period, TV Globo Brasília opened with a ceremony attended by Roberto Marinho and senior Federal District and federal representatives. Its inaugural broadcast included a football match between Vasco da Gama and Flamengo and a live edition of Som Livre Exportação produced in Brasília. The station has long had strategic importance within Globo's national news operation because Brasília is the center of Brazil's federal government. Its journalism has therefore supplied reports, interviews, political analysis and live coverage for national programs as well as producing local newscasts. In 1983, Bom Dia Brasil was produced from Brasília for a period when the program placed particular emphasis on political and economic affairs. Although production later returned to Rio de Janeiro, TV Globo DF continued contributing reporting and commentary to national television. Local programming developed through successive versions of Globo's regional news formats. DFTV, the station's principal local news brand, launched in 1983 and eventually developed afternoon and evening editions. Bom Dia DF began in 1991, while Globo Comunidade became a platform for community and civic reporting. The station has also operated local sports, cultural and service formats, including a fully local edition of Globo Esporte, the cultural program Articultura, the seasonal Distrito Cultural and the short-form traffic and weather service Radar DF. TV Globo DF broadcasts on VHF channel 10 and also uses UHF channel 20 transmitters in Gama and Brazlândia to address reception limitations in parts of the service area. Its studios are located in Brasília's North Radio and Television Sector, while transmission facilities are associated with the Brasília Digital TV Tower in Lago Norte. Digital transmission began in April 2009, and the station's news programs moved to high definition in December 2013. Analog broadcasting on channel 10 ended on November 17, 2016, as part of Brazil's federally coordinated digital switchover. In May 2025, the station's public identity was changed from TV Globo Brasília to TV Globo DF, retiring the Brasília designation after more than five decades. The revised name emphasizes the station's service area, the Federal District, while preserving its connection to Globo's national television network. The station remains focused on local news, politics, public services, community issues, sports and cultural coverage for the capital region.

The origins of TV Globo DF date to Globo's effort to establish a presence in Brazil's federal capital. On April 27, 1962, Organizações Globo received a concession to create a television channel in Brasília. The station was not immediately operational; while Globo was building its broader network, programming reached Brasília through TV Nacional between 1967 and 1969. After roughly two years of preparation, TV Globo Brasília began broadcasting on April 21, 1971, the anniversary of Brasília's founding. The opening ceremony included Roberto Marinho and prominent federal and local officials. The first broadcast combined a Vasco da Gama–Flamengo football match with a live edition of Som Livre Exportação from the Federal District. From its beginning, the station served a role beyond ordinary local broadcasting. Brasília's concentration of federal institutions made it particularly valuable to Globo's national news operation. The station supplied political reporting and commentary for the network, and in 1983 Bom Dia Brasil was produced from Brasília while the program concentrated on government, economic and political subjects. The national production later moved back to Rio de Janeiro, but the Brasília newsroom continued contributing material to national broadcasts. The station's local schedule evolved through Globo's regional news model. Early local journalism included Hoje, local segments of Jornal Nacional, Globinho, Plantão Globo, Jornalismo Eletrônico and the interview program Panel. Jornal das Sete ran from 1979 until the introduction of the Praça TV format. DFTV premiered on January 3, 1983, initially as an evening newscast, later adding afternoon and other editions. Bom Dia DF launched on January 7, 1991, and Globo Comunidade followed during the same year. Through the 1990s and 2000s, presenters and formats changed repeatedly as the station adjusted its local journalism to place greater emphasis on community concerns, service information and audience participation. The station added specialist programming over time. Articultura, broadcast from 2000 to 2002, covered Brasília's cultural scene. Radar DF, introduced in 2007, offered short traffic, weather and headline updates, while Redação Móvel, launched in 2009, brought live reporting and audience participation from different neighborhoods. Globocop aerial coverage was added in 2012. Globo Esporte became fully local in August 2012, and Distrito Cultural ran as a seasonal arts and events program from 2015 through 2019. Technically, TV Globo Brasília began digital transmission on April 22, 2009, during the second edition of DFTV. Its journalism moved to high definition in December 2013. The station ended analog VHF broadcasting on channel 10 at 11:59 p.m. on November 17, 2016, in accordance with Brazil's national digital-transition schedule. To improve reception in parts of the Federal District, it also operates channel 20 UHF transmitters in Gama and Brazlândia. Its main transmission facilities are associated with the Brasília Digital TV Tower in Lago Norte, while production is based in SRTVN. Personnel changes have shaped the local newsroom. In 2019, Fred Ferreira returned to the station's morning news after Guilherme Portanova departed for RecordTV Brasília. Natália Godoy joined Ferreira on Bom Dia DF in 2020. José Maurício Oliveira replaced Stephanie Alves on Globo Esporte that year. In 2023, layoffs during a wider Globo branch restructuring included journalists Fábio William and Márcia Witczak; Fábio William's departure led Fabiano Andrade to present the first edition of DFTV. In 2025, the station retired the TV Globo Brasília name and adopted TV Globo DF. The rebranding preserved its Globo affiliation while defining the outlet through the territory it serves.
