Overview
TV Canção Nova Aracaju is a Brazilian television station based in Aracaju, the capital of Sergipe. It broadcasts on channel 13 (41 UHF digital) and is an owned-and-operated station of TV Canção Nova, belonging to the Sistema Canção Nova de Comunicação, the media arm of the Catholic Canção Nova community. Its studios are located at the Sergipe headquarters of Canção Nova in the Inácio Barbosa neighborhood, and its transmitters are in the Santo Antônio neighborhood. The station was originally inaugurated on 5 November 1987 as TV Jornal, part of the Rede Jornal de Comunicação owned by the Alves family. It was initially affiliated with Rede Manchete and later with Rede Bandeirantes. In 1997, facing financial difficulties, the Alves family sold the station to the Canção Nova community for 12 million reais. On 7 August 1997, it became TV Canção Nova Aracaju, switching to Catholic programming. In April 1998, it moved to new studios in the Inácio Barbosa neighborhood. The station began digital transmissions on 17 November 2009 and ceased analog broadcasts on 30 May 2018. It produces local programming including daily Masses, news bulletins, and weekly shows such as A Voz do Pastor, No Combate da Oração, Igreja e Você, and Juntos Somos Mais, while the rest of its schedule comes from TV Canção Nova's headquarters in Cachoeira Paulista, São Paulo.
History
The concession for channel 13 VHF in Aracaju was granted on 20 March 1986 to then-governor of Sergipe, João Alves Filho, who later became Minister of the Interior under President José Sarney. The station was inaugurated on 5 November 1987 as TV Jornal, in a ceremony attended by Governor Antônio Carlos Valadares, Aracaju mayor Jackson Barreto, Archbishop Dom Luciano Duarte (who blessed its studios), and other guests. The station was part of Rede Jornal de Comunicação, which also controlled Rádio Jornal de Aracaju (now on 91.3 FM) and Propriá (sold to Rede Xodó), FM Jornal (sold in 2000 to Rede Aleluia), and Jornal da Manhã (renamed in 2001 to Correio de Sergipe), all under the direction of Maria do Carmo Alves, wife of João Alves Filho. TV Jornal was initially affiliated with Rede Manchete, part of the network during its golden era. After Manchete's first major crisis, the station left the network and migrated to Rede Bandeirantes in 1993. In 1997, Rede Jornal de Comunicação faced financial difficulties, and TV Jornal was the first company put up for sale by the Alves family. Initially, the owners offered it to the Archdiocese of Aracaju, but the church lacked the resources to acquire it. The station also received a purchase proposal from Rede Record, which had been expanding across the country. At the same time, the Catholic Canção Nova community learned the station was for sale and, needing to expand the signal of TV Canção Nova with a generator, negotiated the purchase of TV Jornal from the Alves family for 12 million reais, divided into 24 installments of R$ 500,000. The purchase motivated Canção Nova to create the Dai-me Almas project, where community faithful became partners and fundraisers to help pay for the station through donations. The project continues today to help with maintenance costs and other Canção Nova projects nationwide. On 7 August 1997, TV Jornal passed to the control of Sistema Canção Nova de Comunicação, leaving the secular Band programming (which had its signal replaced by a retransmitter on channel 44 UHF) and becoming TV Canção Nova Aracaju, with programming essentially focused on the Catholic Church. In April 1998, it left the old Rede Jornal de Comunicação facilities in Santo Antônio and inaugurated new studios in the Inácio Barbosa neighborhood, where it began operating alongside other Canção Nova projects in Aracaju. At that time, it began producing journalistic pieces for TV Canção Nova newscasts and a reduced local schedule based mainly on broadcasting Masses and other celebrations promoted by the community. Along with TV Atalaia, TV Canção Nova was one of the first stations in Aracaju to implement its digital signal, officially starting digital transmissions on 17 November 2009, after Minister of Communications Hélio Costa signed the concession for channel 41 UHF, which had been in experimental transmissions since the 12th. In 2018, a few months after the analog shutdown, it began producing its local programming in high definition. Based on the federal decree for the transition of Brazilian TV stations from analog to digital, TV Canção Nova Aracaju, like other Aracaju stations, ceased its channel 13 VHF transmissions on 30 May 2018, following ANATEL's official schedule. Currently, the station broadcasts daily Masses and other celebrations held locally by Canção Nova clergy in Aracaju, as well as news bulletins during programming. It also airs weekly productions such as A Voz do Pastor, No Combate da Oração, Igreja e Você, and Juntos Somos Mais, while the rest of the schedule is produced by TV Canção Nova from its headquarters in Cachoeira Paulista, São Paulo. Various other programs have been part of the station's schedule and were discontinued. In its early years, the journalism of then-TV Jornal was represented by attractions such as Repórter Jornal (based on Repórter Manchete) and Jornal na TV. In the 1990s, interview and debate programs also aired, such as Isto é Sergipe, presented by André Barros; Canal 13, under Watyson Oliveira; and Batalha na TV, presented in the afternoons by journalist Carlos Batalha. After the affiliation with Band, the nightly newscast Rede Cidade was created, airing before Jornal Bandeirantes, anchored by Victor Amaral. Among the reporters who were part of the station in this phase were names such as Adelson Barreto, Anna Fontes, Anselmo Tavares, Nivaldo Cândido, Eduardo Abril, Eron Ribeiro, Rivando Góis, and Otoniel Amado, "Bareta", the latter known for his police reporting. After the sale to TV Canção Nova, Batalha na TV and Rede Cidade, the only programs still on air, were cancelled (the former migrated to TV Cidade), and the station's journalism department began working almost exclusively on producing pieces for TV Canção Nova's newscasts.
